Vanity: FreeRepublic.com responding very slowly, long delay?
Self ^ | May 22, 2024 | Dayglored

For the past half hour or so, FR has been slow to respond, with a long delay. Refreshing a page pauses for 10-30 seconds, then suddenly bingo it's there. All other sites are acting normally. I'm on Spectrum in Upstate NY with very high-speed cable. No other symptoms.

Anybody else noticing a longish delay to get a page from FR?

Disclosure: I'm spoiled. The early years of FR were pretty slow all the time, and JohnRob has had this site working extremely well for so long now that a 10 second pause is unusual.

Kudos JohnRob, and I hope if it's the site, that it's nothing serious.

ping

Hoping it’s not a disk-error timeout or database grumpiness.

Ok, so it ISN’T my computer after all. I’ve been cussing it a blue streak.
It happened last night as well.

I am NOT a techie, but I think it is MICROSOFT, who is the slow moving culprit.

Now, the geniuses on FR will tell me that I am nuts.

So I defer to those who feel it is Free Republic.

It's not Microsoft. This time. :-)

Last I knew, nothing about FR was running on Microsoft products. The servers were Linux, etc. and I don't think that's changed.

I'm on an iPad (Apple). No MS stuff involved at my end either.

However, it's still a free country, so blame MS and Gates if you prefer. :-)

FWIW, it just got a lot better for me. Down to about 4-5 seconds, nearly back to normal. Wheee!

Eh, that didn't last long. Slow again.

Time to buckle up, something's unstable.

Didn't you get the memo? "Mr." Potato Head is no more. It's gender neutral now, just "Potato Head".

Please try to keep up.

No more co-located FR hardware server any more (used to be Jim/John owned server hardware co-located at an NTT data center in the CA Bay Area/San Jose), but John/Jim switched to a virtual server/cloud computing service call “Linode” a year or 2 ago that later got bought out by “Akamai”. The PING times to Akamai are OK...so possibly a DDOS attack on the FR domain???
