Political commentators joked that Biden’s staff is panicking after the gaffe-prone president said he would be "happy" to debate Trump during an interview with Howard Stern Friday.
"I don't know if you're going to debate your opponent," Stern said.
The president replied, "I am, somewhere, I don’t know when. I'm happy to debate him."
Biden's comments represent a shift from past remarks about possibly debating Trump. Last month, he told reporters it would depend "on his behavior."
Trump was quick to challenge Biden to debate him, declaring on Truth Social, "Everyone knows he doesn’t really mean it, but in case he does, I say, ANYWHERE, ANYTIME, ANYPLACE, an old expression used by Fighters."
Conservative social media accounts had similar responses on X, many of whom referred to Biden’s "handlers" being unhappy with his response.
"Crooked Joe Biden says he's ‘happy to debate’ President Trump," RNC Research wrote. "His handlers must be furious!"
"Biden weakly answers Howard Stern that he will debate Trump, HA!" Fox News host Jeanine Pirro wrote alongside a laughing emoji. "Guess his aides couldn’t stop Biden before he answered."

His handlers likely never told Biden that he wasn't going to agree to debate Trump or that debating Trump was a bad idea.
I would suggest that Jill and the Handlers control every bit of news given to the President. He probably hasn’t watched CNN in 3 years. He probably gets a poll every Sunday telling him that he’s 12 points ahead.
But I would go and suggest by late July...Trump has signed up RFK Jr and will be conducting 3 debates with him in September...putting Biden’s crew in a awkward position.

Just because he said it on the Stern show doesn’t mean its going to happen. Though I don’t know how he weasels out of it without taking a hit in the polls. Sure the media will circle the wagons for Biden but that’s a tough sell to the American Voter.

A 2-way debate twixt RFK Jr. & Trump—with Biden absent—would indeed make Biden look cowardly and incapable, but it gives Kennedy an open shot at the front runner and he’s smart enough to call out Donald on some of his exaggerations which we know he’s prone to make.
There is debate about RFK’s draw—from Biden, or from Trump—so I don’t see this 2-way as a winner for DJT, should it materialize.
Thankful that RFK is unlistenable.
Cagey Biden knows all the angles.
“Saying” he’ll debate Irump is one thing.
“Doing” so is another.
