USS Carney (DDG-64) and USS Arleigh Burke (DDG-51) shot down between four and six Iranian-launched ballistic missiles, a senior military official told reporters Sunday.
Both ships were in the Mediterranean. Carney most recently made a port visit to Palermo, Sicily, Italy, on April 10. Arleigh Burke is forward deployed to Rota, Spain.
A senior military official said that land- and sea-based aircraft were also involved in the U.S. response. USNI News understands that the aircraft did not come from USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN-69). The aircraft carrier is in the Red Sea as part of the country’s Operation Prosperity Guardian, which aims to protect ships and commercial vessels from the Houthis.
U.S. Central and European commands shot down 80 one-way attack uncrewed aerial vehicles, in addition to the ballistic missiles, Central Command said in a release. Drones came from Iran and Yemen.

Let’s see. To shoot from the Mediterranean. That means the anti-rocket misses had to fly over Israel. So where were they intercepted? Over which country. Could the debris be looked into to see if they were not dummies as Iran suggested? Too many unanswereds here.

That’s not how intercepts happen.
A defensive missile will make a decision on intercept, blow itself up and shrapnel is supposed to damage the intercepted vehicle.
With ballistics, this generally won’t work. They are already in descent at very high speeds, and you hope there is no decoy or maneuvering.
The most you can do is explode some shrapnel in front of the flight path. You aren’t going to pulverize it. That’s absurd and not how it works. As above, the intercepting missile’s warhead will be shrapnel and carefully designed material that will damage a, say, jet engine (airplanes have their engines damaged this way, the plane isn’t destroyed).
But in the case of ballistic missiles, this doesn’t work. They are still going to hit the target.
This is why after decades there is no decent ICBM defense, and likely never will be.
