American Deterrence Is Failing In The South China Sea
Forbes.com ^ | Apr 1, 2024 | Ariel Cohen

One of Beijing's enduring hobbies is accusing Washington of violating or abusing international law. This selective outrage is justifiably ignored, given China’s unwillingness to abide by international law and disregard for U.N. arbitration concerning demarcation in the South China Sea. “International law with Chinese characteristics” was easily mocked and ignored when American deterrence and international safeguards stymied Beijing’s ambitions. Unfortunately, that security architecture is unraveling.

In 2009, China began to make expansive claims vis-à-vis the South China Sea when it unveiled its infamous nine-dash line, which claimed vast swathes of maritime territory. In 2016, the U.N.-backed Permanent Court of Arbitration in the Hague ruled that these claims were meritless. Years have passed since the 2016 ruling, but Beijing continues to double down, leading countries like Vietnam and the Philippines to deepen their cooperation with the United States.

March 2023’s brinksmanship between the Philippines and China demonstrated the urgency of enhanced defense capabilities for the states bordering the South China Sea and Southeast Asia. Now, the Philippines and China are playing a dangerous game of armed chicken in the largest disputed territory in the world. The Philippines is not alone, as other countries have had regular run-ins with China over the status of the South China Sea. Thus, the sea is now a contested space as the Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, Brunei, and Taiwan look to counter China’s actions. China’s violation of the territorial integrity of littoral states will only continue and make the region more dangerous unless American deterrence and resolve come to the fore.

it was literally within a couple months of Obama taking power that China grabbed the main Spratley Islands and quickly fortified them to make it a fait-accompli

American Deterrence Is Failing In The South China Sea

Despite any weapons or forces you may have, 'Deterrence' is only as good as the perceived willingness to use those weapons or forces, and anyone can see that the Biden Crime family, headed by Traitor Joe, is bought and paid for by the Chinese and is a wholly owned subsidiary of the CCP, so there is no threat that these weapons will be used.

We have clear strategy for maritime deterrence in the South China Sea. We will show will, intent, capabilit and strategic reach by getting bogged down in a land war over breakaway provinces in Ukraine. Because the real enemy is Putin who we must destroy by all means possible. That will show the Chinese that we mean business. [/s for you fools who think that is is an actual stragegy]

It might help if we weren’t funding their military build up with our consumer dollars, but we have to have our cheap toys, so there.

Yet many common low-cost items are only had from outside the US, directly or indirectly. Due to past embrace by pols.

It wasn't just the politicians. American consumers including many Freepers embraced the idea of getting their "made by communist slave labor" products for less. They're the ones who made it profitable to off shore, and made it impossible for companies to compete with American labor.

I am sure Australia is part of the Communist goal of complete Godless conquest, as is that of Islam for its false god.

I didn’t understand that post.

You said that

Germany sends troops to Australia as focus shifts to Indo-Pacific

with China being the prime reason, and I said,

I am sure Australia is part of the Communist goal of complete Godless conquest, as is that of Islam for its false god.

Meaning both seek dominion, as their master does, in seeking the power and glory of God. (Is, 14:14.15)

End of Pax Americana. From 1945 - 2022. It lasted for 77 years.
