Iran seeks to create ‘strategic depth’ in the Mediterranean - analysis A 5,000km “strategic depth” clearly indicates Iran now views the whole region as its “near abroad

Iran is seeking to create “strategic depth” in the Mediterranean Sea, Iranian military adviser Yahya Safavi said in a recent speech. This appears to admit Tehran’s larger ambitions in the region.

Iran has already taken over swaths of Iraq, Syria, and Lebanon, using proxies, and it has operationalized the Houthis in Yemen to attack ships in the Red Sea. Tehran also backs Palestinian Islamic Jihad and Hamas. It now appears to have even larger ambitions.

Safavi is a former commander in the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. He now works as a military adviser to the Iranian regime and has an academic role at several universities. As such, he is very much central to the Iranian security apparatus and its strategic thinking in the region.

“Our strategic defense depth is the Mediterranean Sea, and we need to increase our own strategic depth by 5,000 kilometers.”

Iran..backing proxy groups and arming them with long-range missiles and drones.... Hezbollah has bragged that its missiles can target all of Israel. Hamas has fired 9,000 rockets since October 7, and Hezbollah has fired thousands as well.

The US should not care. We don’t need to care. That entire region of that world may need policing — but not by us.

As usual with Iran, words are flung about understanding nothing. Iran is the center of Shia. They are not Sunni.

Hamas is Sunni. Repeat this over and over. Palestine is Sunni. Ditto.

The Shiites and Sunnis have hated each other for hundreds of years prior to 1949’s creation of Israel. Huge battles over the history have been fought. Actual combat battles, not people yelling at each other.

20% casualties in those wars. Think about that. Think of what 20% casualties of the US Army would mean. They hate each other.

About 85% of the world of Islam is Sunni. This is deceptive because of Asia. It’s nearly all Sunni, particularly Indonesia with its enormous population.

Iran, Iraq, Azerbaijan and Bahrain are all majority Shiite. Then they have scattered huge minorities in many countries. “There are as many Shiites in India as in Iraq”

So there is text in the article saying Iran supports Hamas. It’s just not so. Hamas is Sunni. They DO unquestionably support Hezbollah, but that’s up in Lebanon, nowhere near Gaza.
