Charity that allegedly gave just 1 cent of every $1 to cancer victims is sued for deceiving donors

The Women's Cancer Fund raised $18.3 million by vowing to help patients, telling donors that their money would help pay the living expenses of women going through treatment for the disease. But a new lawsuit from the FTC and 10 states allege that the bulk of the money instead went to pay the charity's president and for-profit fundraisers.

The lawsuit, filed on March 11 in federal court, alleges that the Women's Cancer Fund raised the money from 2017 to 2022 by making deceptive and misleading claims. In reality, the bulk of the donations went to the $775,139 salary of the charity's president, Gregory Anderson, and to pay for-profit fundraisers $15.55 million, as well as overhead expenses, the lawsuit alleges.

"[O]f the $18.25 million donated to the Women's Cancer Fund only $194,809 – roughly one percent – was spent directly on helping women with cancer," the lawsuit claims.

An awful lot of "charities" are scams.

If someone wants to give to a charity, they should check out to whom they are giving first. It's not hard to find on the Web. Here is an example: nonprofitpoint.com/charities-with-lowest-overhead/.

Also maybe see charitywatch.org/nonprofit-compensation-packages-of-1-million-or-more. Now to be fair some of them probably earn it -- running a huge charity is a tough job and you need someone very skilled who could probably make more in the for-profit sector in charge. That said, suspect at least of some of them don't come close to deserving that much compensation.

I could list some of my personal favorites and least favorites.

OK, will list one of my favorites: St. Jude Children's Research. See St. Jude Children's Research. They do a lot of good. One site says $0.82 of every dollar goes to "treatment, research and future needs." That apparently does not count the funds spent to pay for flights and provide housing/food to families. The Church itself pays for most if not all admin costs. However, St. Jude does spend a bit on advertising.

When I had money, I gave to St. Jude. Intend to do so again if I ever get paid - and of course to Free Republic.

Anyone else have any favorite(s)?

IMO, much of the cancer charity realm is deceiving and only in it for the money. SGK is one. Their donation walk sponsor drives for cancer are despicable IMO.

Gee, how greedy.

Even the Clinton Foundation usually manages to disburse as much as 3% of their donations to the people they claim to help...

I used to think that most charities were scams....

But now, I believe that they are ALL scams,

with the possible exception of a few small local operations run by volunteers, not paid executives and employees.

Didn’t think I’d get in before someone else referenced George Costanza’s “Human Fund.” That could be where this guy got the idea for his scam.
