Why Are Some Wind Turbines Not Turning?

SNIP

2. The Wind Is Too Strong

Wind turbines need wind to function, yet too much wind is ineffective.

Wind turbines can only be safely operated up to a particular wind speed, known as the “cut-off wind speed” or “cut-out wind speed.”

Any wind exceeding the limit is too powerful for the mechanism to manage, posing threats to the equipment and the workers.

Call me stupid, but isn't more wind in theory better for wind energy production?

Oh well to the greeny weenies, fossil fuels are the ultimate evil.

IIRC the main problem with too high wind speed is the turbine will produce more power than the inverter can handle (when converting DC to AC). Thus, they lean to the turbine shutting down vs trying to throttle down (or scaling up the inverter).

This is one thing I hate about the so-called "green movement". It almost always results in more control by the political class, who don't care about efficiency. The engineers, when having to please the political class instead of consumers, don't have to make things work effectively. They have to make sure their devices pass the red-tape bureaucracy and that's all.

This is amazing …

Nothing in the article about climate change causing wind patterns to change or something

I might have to print this out and frame it

What a dog's breakfast of an article! Nikole writes like a fourth grader.

This tidbit is interesting, though:

Some nations use a system known as ‘Constraint Payments.’

This method ensures that even if a power producer is requested to shut down by the National Grid, they are still compensated for the energy they might have created if they had not been forced to shut down. This offers a consistent cash stream for the generator while also improving the country’s energy security.

That's just another government subsidy in disguise and given a harmless sounding name. It's like the government paying farmers to NOT produce crops.

These economic distortions perfectly demonstrate why intermittent and unreliable wind is a loser.

Some days the sun don’t shine and the wind don’t blow

Remedy: Attach dynamite and light fuse. Haul remains to the dump where it belonged all along.

Stupid windmills.

On Big Island (Hawai’i) there is a crew that keeps useless windmills that aren’t even attached to the grid turning just so the government can say “LOOK, we have wind power.” I haven’t seen them for a while but they were rusty and the oil had spilled all over the ground.

“he main problem with too high wind speed is the turbine will produce more power than the inverter can handle “

Guess the rotors aren’t variable-pitch like the larger airplane propellers.

The turbines around here start spinning at 12mph and turn off at 35mph. They always go the same speed. The blades are feathered like a planes propeller to hold the blades still in high wind.

Guess there was more “boondoggle” connected to the wind generators than the public was ever informed of. Of course, there was also a lot of the public that never believed these things would ever be practical either. Experience seems to be bearing out that last theory.

One of the factors limiting lifespan of wind turbines is gearbox failure, often beginning as soon as seven years. The gears themselves may wear out but usually it is the bearings that fail under severe stress. They may or may not be reparable or replaceable. The publicized lifespan of 20-25 years is wildly optimistic especially for the large scale turbines and blades, even more unrealistic for the offshore variety. Sometimes you see one idle because it is just burned out.

Windmills for electric power has always been a crappy idea from the crappy idea people in govt. It wastes billions so those crappy idea people are fine with it.

I like the constraint payment idea. I call the National Grid Czar and say I want to be compensated for energy I could have produced but didn’t because they didn’t want it. I don’t tell them I don’t actually own a windmill. Profit!

Somebody ought to tell the Germans, before they cut down 250,000 trees to put up wind turbines.
