Russia fuel refineries on fire after Ukrainian drone strikes, officials say

A fleet of Ukrainian drones has targeted Russia, causing explosions and fires at fuel refineries, cutting electricity supplies and reaching Moscow and beyond, according to reports from Russian authorities.

Russian fuel facilities in Oryol and Nizhny Novgorod regions were on fire on Tuesday after drone attacks, local governors and media said. Air defence systems reacted to 25 drones launched by Ukraine over several Russian regions, RIA state news reported, citing Russia’s defence ministry. It was not immediately clear whether all the drones were destroyed.

“In the morning, the Kstovo industrial zone, a fuel and energy complex facility, was attacked by unmanned aerial vehicles,” Gleb Nikitin, governor of Nizhny Novgorod, said on the Telegram messaging app, adding that a fuel processing unit was on fire. RIA reported a fire at Lukoil’s refinery in Kstovo.

Oryol’s governor, Andrey Klychkov, said Ukraine launched a drone attack at a fuel facility, while RIA cited emergency services as saying one petroleum tank was on fire after the attack. Oryol is about 150 kilometres from the Ukrainian border.

The Baza Telegram channel, which is close to Russian law enforcement, posted a photo of large flames rising above what appeared to be an industrial facility. The channel cited Oryol residents as saying there was an explosion before the fire.

Seven settlements in Russia’s Belgorod region that borders Ukraine were left without electricity after a Ukraine-launched drone dropped explosives, said Vyacheslav Gladkov, the governor of Belgorod region.

Roman Starovoit, governor of the Kursk region which also borders Ukraine, said six Ukraine-launched drones were downed over his region, with emergency services checking for possible damage.

One drone flying towards Moscow was downed over the Ramensky district near the capital, said Moscow’s mayor, Sergei Sobyanin.

I guess it’s good that drone vs drone is happening somewhere else, so if it ever happens here, and there are at least a few competent engineers left, we’ll be able to deal with it.

Nizhny Novgorod is 250 miles east of Moscow. Thank you Mathias Rust for proving what is possible.

The Russians have been bombarding Ukraine continuously for over two years, and its not been “pretty”. Im not sure how you’ve missed that.

IMHO, All of Ukraine should prepare for a cease-fire and hold positions, determined to hold on to what it has - remaining.

Recovery of land may occur years later, when younger generations of Ukrainians and Russians have improved relations.

Notions of justice and retributions in Russia v Ukraine aka Ukraine v Russia, are best: “seek peace, now, while they still can.”

Ukraine does not have, and will not get, the resources to win anything more than what it currently has managed to hold.

Moscow does not have the sense to respect the blessings of its own independence following 1991.

Whatever are the flaws of each country and its populations, all need to focus more on:

Prefer God
Love truth
Be kind

What's interesting is watching the pro-Ukies poop their little pants over oil refineries - when they had no interest in them before...

Ukraine seems to have the means, now, to cause serious damage to these targets. It may be that its got more long range drones to expend on this sort of target, or that more attractive targets are now better defended.

Either way, the logic of war has led to these targets.

IIRC you guys never cared about Ukrainian grain elevators until the Russians started bombing them.

Even if Russia “wins”
they will have to live with 4GW for years.
that is all, their infrastructure will be attacked randomly and effectively.
Their politics are not compelling enough to rally the masses
to fight for the deadly schemes of old old school tyrants and Martinets.

Glad to see they are back - this ought to cause the Moscovians to withdraw more troops from the south. Hope they can take and hold Belgorod.
