The Very Best Movies from 1999
Hollywood in Toto ^ | 5 Dec 2023 | Christian Toto

It might be the most unforgettable year for film in ages

We look back at the ’90s with newfound respect these days.

The decade lacked the signature style of the ‘80s, and few films or TV shows sing its praises.

The ‘80s has “Stranger Things,” “The Wedding Singer” and “Hot Tub Time Machine,” to name just a few movies honoring the decade. The ‘90s? We’re still waiting, and flops like “Mid90s,” Jonah Hill’s respectable debut as writer/director, don’t count.

It’s still the last decade when free speech reigned supreme. Political correctness began in that era, but it didn’t fully take over Hollywood … yet.

What’s undeniable? The ‘90s wrapped with a remarkable year for film. Stunning, even.

“The Matrix”

Yes, the ensuing sequels got worse, and worse, until the fourth film in the saga left almost everyone cold. That doesn’t diminish the original, a cultural behemoth that revived star Keanu Reeves’ career and set a new standard for action movies.

The Matrix was basically a pastiche of several Philip K. Dick stories (mainly “Ubik”), but there’s no denying that it made a cultural impact... introducing “red-pilling” to the lexicon. The fact that the Wachowski brother BOTH later became trannies is just too freakin’ weird, though, and wrecks the movie for me in retrospect

American Beauty was crap. Rotten movie and I believe it got the Oscar.

Matrix is an incredibly looking movie, with a terrible stupid plot. Dark City the year before did all that reality questioning 10 times better. Problem is nobody watched it.

The sequels... I never watched any of them. And yeah, the Wachowskis going trans made me wonder too.

I watched it with 2 other people. So that’s 4 of us. And given the box office I think we’re it.

“The Blair Witch Project” It’s the film that has aged the worst on this list...

Only because of the myriad miserable attempts to copy it's vibe have made the found footage genre so trite. The viral marketing campaign was genius for the time.

I read somewhere that the character ‘Switch’ was originally written in as someone who was the opposite gender while in the Matrix. Would make sense with who the directors are.

Yep. It was simply one Hollywood cliche after another. All that was missing was the Cop who is a fascist and closet homosexual, and the priest who molests little boys.

Office space and matrix were good, the rest of this list is hollyweird garbage just like 99.9999% of everything they do now.

DARK CITY! THUMBS UP!

Last time I was in a theater was to see the remake of True Grit. Before that it was Gladiator, and Master and Commander.

And to think, in the 1960s and 1970sI went to lots of movies.

Last time for me was last July to see the latest Mission Impossible - i thought it deserved to be seen on the big screen. I will go see DUNE at some point.

Blair witch is wicked scary. It perfectly captured the feeling of being in the woods at night. We used to live on the edge of some woods. I couldn’t watch this movie without locking all the doors.
