Mr Massie (R-Ky.) living off-grid
Twitter/x ^ | March 3 | Rep. Thomas Massie

@RepThomasMassie

My off-grid home runs on a wrecked Model S Tesla car battery that I repurposed. This is the display I created for it 6 years ago. The upper left graph is a 24 hour history of the net energy into the battery. Today was a great solar day in Kentucky!

That’s a nice setup. I wish I had the skills to do this.

Massie is an MIT grad, from the pre-woke era, so he’s got that going for him.

He is such a doofus. He has posted this for years, yet all he does in Congress is performative theatrics that accomplish absolutely nothing. Go be an engineer and have fun, and let someone else serve who gives a shit, and won’t be a butt boy for The Squad.

The grid does go down.

It does not stay down, so far, but it does go down.

Having a personal backup means you are not stuck in the dark and cold while they fix things.

He’s one of the very few who seems to actually understand and follow the constitution as well

He lives in BF Kentucky about 40 miles from my ole BF Kentucky home. Overall, I’m satisfied with him but he’s no Trump fan. The day after the steal he was on a local radio program yucking it up as if nothing had happened. Our district went something like 70% for Trump. Never a word about 70% of his constituents being disenfranchised! I’ll vote for him again though.

Not sure what BF means, hopefully something positive.

He does seem uncomfortably friendly with the leftist Congress critters.

From my research the Tesla batteries are irrecoverable if they are run too low.

FWIW I love off grid. My shop is powered but not my home. Once you get use to the winters it’s not too bad.

I have an off grid house. It’s no big deal. It’d cheaper than running $50 K of wire.

I guess I’m showing my age again. The term used to be used to denote an area in the middle of nowhere, “bumfuck, Egypt” or in mine and Massie’s case “bumfuck, Kentucky”. BF, Egypt in mixed company. I’m not sure the origin of the term but I’ve heard it since I was a kid.

L-ion batteries last a long time if properly cared for. That means controlled discharge rate and controlled charge rate with temperature sensors.

BUT, they eventually fail, when they do they are extremely dangerous. I would NEVER EVER use one in my home. (I will never own a car with them.)

I’ve been a Ham operator for close to 50 years and hold a GROL commercial license. I am old enough to have had Elmers teaching me how to fix/build things.

For home off grid use, old fashioned golf cart batteries are a simple solution and they are safe and forgiving of discharge rate. With solar panels and a wind generator they are a simple solution to powering a cabin for most things. Air conditioning is not one of them.

I suspect that most wrecked battery powered autos have a serious disposal problem.

I would love to learn how to live in an off grid dwelling, but at 63 and suffering from Long Covid I don’t know that I ever will.
