He's actually a little too negative in my opinion, especially about the weight and comfort which is not that bad. I played around with all Saturday. It's the coolest piece of consumer tech the world has ever seen. The way to think of it as an infinitely flexible display for use at your desk/couch or light movement around your home/office. The idiots you see wearing it on the street or driving are just doing stunts for clickbait. I set up a virtual Mac display and scrolled this site at about 10ft tall lol with X and email on the side and a football game playing over my kitchen sink. I looked at family videos shot in 3D and it felt like my mom and neice were in the room making cinnamon buns. I watched the Good, the Bad & the Ugly, a classic I've seen a million times but never on the big screen at 30ft scale in my living room. The immersive experience like the one where a butterfly lands on your finger followed by a giant dinosaur walking through your house is true Star Trek stuff and its only going to get more insane as developers go nuts with it. If you have you have any gadget fan/sci-fi fan/early adopter aspect to your personality at all you will get $4k worth of enjoyment out of this thing for sure. Not usually a super Apple fanboy when it comes buying 1st gen stuff but this won't be updated for a couple years and it's that cool.

To me, it seems like these devices are mainly useful for playing games. Unless you live alone, not sure what the movie watching feature does either. I don’t think my better half would take kindly to my just sitting on the sofa and watching a movie with this device.

It’s funny to me that people consider watching TV together to be quality time. When I was a kid my parents classified that as mind numbing and insisted we do actual activities have conversations. The worm slowly turns.

The way I would sum it up is “How much of your life do you spend looking a display? Alot. So why not have the craziest display science ever created. My wife can watch Bridgerton on her own. But yeah it is mainly for when you’re on your own in your office, at home or traveling on a plane or something.

I can see astronomy programs getting a lot of use out of this.

I wonder if the military is using something like this as a simulation tool.
The space program too.

There’s a cool app where it looks like you’re on a rooftop looking up at the stars. You can look up and see the constellations. You reach up and pick a 3D model of Orion out of the sky rotate in your hand and info pops up on that particular constellation. It’s stuff you dreamed about as a kid. There’s another one where you size a model of an F1 car up to true scale, then take it apart. It looks so solid you can walk up and look at the rivets from an inch away. Feels like you set your beer down on it. I’d at least go check out a demo at the store.

You are right. This is the future of computing... in its infancy. Over the next decade, we’re going to watch this technology become more compact and affordable. The possibilities are endless here. This will become the computer/TV/phone & lots of other things combined... just like the smartphone has become. You will be on a plane with a more sleek version working in privacy on your computer or watching a movie or having a FaceTime call with friends... and it will be seamless.

Just give it a few years to get beyond a very impressive (and expensive) beta.

Yep not to mention the dystopian aspects of this stuff are very real. My friend was comfortable working all day in tiny, cramped, box-filled office because from his perspective he was on Mt Hood. You can totally envision the world becomeing a more drab place because every is looking at it through mixed reality. Also goverment handing these out as an opiate for the masses and beaming propaganda straight into their eyeballs literaly capable of telling if they were paying attention. However in the meantime I will enjoy watching lifesize NFL highlights.

I have a Quest 2.
Yea watching movies is pretty cool.
Prime puts you in a movie theater Netflix in a snowy mountain resort sitting on a couch in front of a fireplace with a giant TV on top.
Youtube has a whole section of neat VR videos.

How does that work if you require corrective lenses in real life?

There’s a cool app where I walk outdoors and actually see the stars. I can look up and see the constellations. For real. And smell the cool night air. And see the difference between a clear sky, and haze, and see the effects of sky-glow from distant towns. For real. There’s this app called a “telescope”, that I can use to see stars, and planets, and nebulae. Study the surface of the moon. For real.

There’s a real world out there. Go experience it.

Uh...that moment has..well...arrived. I’m more interested in regular feature length content in these super immersive formats. I really like watching old classics that you’ve never seen on the big screen. Rocky, Dirty Harry, Godfather, Lawrence of Arabia, etc.

You send in your prescription and it comes with lenses that you use for yourself and remove if you want to hand it to a friend in “guest mode.”

Yeah this thing expands on that concept in a big way. Netflix doesn’t have an app yet because they’re fighting with Apple over revenue split but the Disney one is pretty cool. However anything you can watch in a browser can be turned in a virtual theater essentially.

I love when people get on a computer to tell me my life is too digitized. Take your own advice and write me a letter.

Step away from the computer every now and then.

There’s a real world out there.

The issue is going to be for those of us who need glasses for distance but need them off when at reading distances (or vice versa).

I wear 1.10 or something like that for distance that makes the screen crystal clear.
They fit inside the headset but I feel that it’s a bit of a pain in the butt..

One would think that my reading glasses would be better seeing that the screen is like 3-4 inches from my eyes but nope.
