I do not believe this article. HCQ has been administered literally billions of times in the tropics for prevention of malaria. If this study were true we would have had millions of deaths in the tropics and a valid study on this would have been published. I took the drug when I worked in Nigeria. They are gaslighting us.

It was approved here in 1956 for the treatment of lupus and rheumatoid arthritis.

It can cause retina problems with long term use. (but in 20 years of practice I never saw one!)

Since you are a clinical Pharmacologist you will be familiar with P450 issues. A recent study indicates this drug is metabolized through that mechanism. That last time I looked it was 3 of them. Some of the Drug Interaction groups have not formalized it on their lists due to needing more studies before they make an official change.

It took me DECADES to find out I have P450 issues. No Doctor thought to check me. I have no doubt that P450 issues have caused complications with this drug and people just have no idea of it.

Even if you don’t have a genetic problem this drug can interact with other drugs and even OTC herbs through the P450 issue.

Too many blanket statements have been made about HCQ without really understanding it.

Btw, Ivermectin could cause a problem for those with a P Glycoprotein genetic issue. (Yep, I have that too)

I have a prescription for HCQ. I don’t take it because there is no way to tell how I am metabolizing it. You can get a test for the overall HCQ but you can’t get the breakdown except through a research study. One study showed that the people with retina problems had a higher percentage of one of the metabolites.

And the NUMBER ONE drug for Lupus.

“If you’ve been diagnosed with lupus, your provider might prescribe hydroxychloroquine or another antimalarial drug. Hydroxychloroquine is the most commonly prescribed treatment for lupus, and most providers will put a patient who has lupus on this medication for the duration of their lives, not just during flare-ups.”

****for the duration of their lives, not just during flare-ups.”****

How many doses is THAT?

How many have died? I’ll bet almost no one.

The idea that HCQ could work against Covid 19 comes from a 2005 study found at PubMed.

That study was actually done using CQ against the SARS-1 virus but that’s pretty close to HCQ and SARS-2.

So it made sense to try HCQ when little was known about Covid other than it was another SARS virus.

The 2005 study was done in a lab using Green Money tissue. SARS-1 was no longer around to run in vivo tests on humans. The first opportunity to do that came in early 2020 and what had worked in the lab didn’t work in real life.
