$60,000 to replace battery. The battery costs more than a brand new car!
Motormouth YouTube Channel ^ | 12-23-2023 | Motormouth

This is a Motormouth couple car video discussing the cost to replace the battery in 2022 Hyundai IONIQ 5. After finding out that his battery protection cover was scratched, the owner was told the battery needed to be replace for more than he paid for the car brand new. Over $60,000, so he decided to make a claim on his insurance and have the car written off.

This is a cautionary tale to not only EV owners and potential owners but also other manufacturers, that these kinds of casts are out much more than consumers are expecting to pay. Hyundai Canada was eventually notified to the customers concerns but only after the car had been written off by the insurer. Watch this story and decide for yourself.

“IOW, I won’t be buying one.”

I wonder how the misguided people who bought a new one can get any value out of it when it is time to trade it in.

I wouldn’t buy a new one but who would buy a used one? No one I think.

The root problem is that Hyundai simultaneously decided that a scratch meant that the whole battery needed to go and that they weren’t going to honor their warranty.

IOW they hosed this guy and he let them, throwing the cost on everyone by way of the insurance company.

Read that cost of driving an EV is equivalent to paying $17 per gallon for gas.

No way.

At the end of the video the kid said that he wouldn't buy another electric vehicle because even if he had chose to replace the battery that the car would have no trade-in value after 8 years. I am not sure how he was figuring but he now has more first-hand experience than I do.

Just as a side note... my wife and I live near the foothills, and we have more windstorms than most areas nearby along with poorly maintained roads with huge potholes and bad pavement. There is always some type of debris laying in the middle of the road that has been hit 20 times before we try to drive around it. No one in their right mind should be driving a low to the road heavy electric car in our area, but people still do. We have an old Dodge police interceptor that we drive only when we are headed straight to the State Highway because it has a harsh ride.

Spare parts margins are different than complete car margins. MFGS normally step on spare parts very hard and dealers purchase at up to a 40% discount. Note there are additional cost of storage, shipment and inventory cost for slow moving items which need to be taken into consideration. Also realize that car companies are in the business of selling complete cars, not spares.

This leaves the owner in a very difficult position.

Nuclear Diamond batteries
= = =

What about Nuclear Blood Diamond batteries?

They use those in Ferraris, Maserattis, Bentlys, etc.

Reviewing the video... I probably could have done a better job, but I think that was still the gist of it.

The goal is NOT to force everyone to drive EVs. Even the most leftist coolaid drinking true believers know that our power grid could never handle adding millions of EVs, even before they ban all coal and natural gas power plants.

The goal is to force everyone to give up their private vehicles and ride mass transit. This will of course require that most people move to high density democrat controlled cities. EVs are just an interim means to that end.

Cell phones, tablets and notebook PCs all used to have replaceable batter. Now the batteries are soldered into the motherboards. Battery won’t hold a charge after 3 to 5 years? No problem. Throw away your now useless device and buy a new one. Same principle but on a larger scale.

.

It’s about pricing you out of Private Vehicles and migrating you to Mass Transit.

Actually, this should not have surprised anyone. These cars are just giant, heavy batteries with wheels on them. Battery goes = throw away the car.

Now the batteries are soldered into the motherboards.

I know that is true with Apple devices, but all of our family's current laptops have batteries that can be replaced. But you do have to take the back cover off which involves removing about 10 screws and then using a guitar pick to pry it off..

In 1989 I bought a new Firebird. My uncle who was a millionaire back when that was still meaningful told me to buy a flashy car if I wanted to catch a good-looking woman. 3 months later I was engaged to the best-looking woman I had ever gone out with. I returned the car a few months after that under the lemon law, but I am still married to the hot chick and she has aged better than I have.

I would guess that the kid was probably looking for a chick magnet and not virtue signaling.
