Tesla is recalling nearly all 2 million of its cars on US roads to limit the use of its Autopilot feature following a two-year probe by US safety regulators of roughly 1,000 crashes in which the feature was engaged.
The limitations on Autopilot serve as a blow to Tesla’s efforts to market its vehicles to buyers willing to pay extra to have their cars do the driving for them.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said the Autopilot system can give drivers a false sense of security and be easily misused in certain dangerous situations when a Tesla’s technology may be unable to safely navigate the road. The over-the-air software update will give Tesla drivers more warnings when they are not paying attention to the road while the Autopilot’s “Autosteer” function is turned on. Those notifications will remind drivers to keep their hands on the wheel and pay attention to the road, according to a statement from NHTSA
They can’t get back by themselves?
Gee, I’m shocked!
After 1000 crashes, the govt. finally initiates a recall. Now that’s being on top of things.
This isn’t a recall in the conventional sense. It’s a software update that gets pushed out. No one is bringing a car back to the dealership. Of course there aren’t any dealerships.
All the Fed agencies have been unleashed to go after Musk.
Never should have called the feature “autopilot” as Hollywood has told us that term means no human intervention. Now they have to nerf the features because users don’t read warnings. Tesla fought doing this but the lawyers and government vultures are circling.
My car has many of those features but calls it “driver assist” for the reason you stated. I disabled that mess immediately.
Autopilot’s “Autosteer” function = suicide feature. +$2,500.
The entire fleet has been recalled for defects and might kill you in auto drive.
TeslaHumper says “sign me up”
they didn’t recall anything
It’s a software upgrade that takes place each time the vehicle connects to a network
The LONG knives are out for Elon Musk and Tesla.
I had a courtesy car (’24 Mercedes) with every feature imaginable. Hated it. The lane keeping was constantly warning me even though I remained in the centre of my lane, the “alertness monitor” told me I was showing fatigue every time I shoulder checked, it constantly warned me while I was changing lanes, it was just unpleasant overall. Then there was the steering assist that would suddenly vibrate the steering wheel for no apparent reason. While driving on a slightly snowy road, the traction control would apply the brakes at the oddest times.
Granted it wasn’t a top of the line S class, but I still expected more from a $75K+ automobile.
When I returned the car I told the service rep that I had named the car “Janet” after my ex-wife, for all the nagging it did
I have a 2017 Subaru Outback. I love the car, but it’s lane keeping assist, which I mostly think is kind of neat, can be dangerous on snow dusted roads.
It will see lines in the snow as lane edges. Sometimes those snow lines wander a bit according to what someone ahead you has done, winds, etc. I had it try to keep me “in the lane” with a very sharp steering correction on a snowy slippery road once. Not a great feeling.
So I keep it off when snow is on the ground.
But biden is requiring Federal workers to travel by EV!!
biden is bogus!!
“When I returned the car I told the service rep that I had named the car “Janet” after my ex-wife, for all the nagging it did”
That’s funny. Did you get a reaction?
I won’t purchase a vehicle with those functions because I don’t want to be on the hook for repair costs after warranty ends (especially when the car’s ECU disables the vehicle until a subsystem is fixed).
The democrats can and will turn OFF your electric car.
They will have data if you are a conservative / republican and then turn OFF your car on election day. It will be called a “glitch”. If you complain you will be arrested on some made up charge.
“The democrats can and will turn OFF your electric car.”
All new consumer vehicles will be subject to remote shutdown within a couple model years.

..
10Boy oh boy...
Makes it sound like people want to do absolutely everything but operate the vehicle..
That used to be the job of passengers, not drivers..
States should offer a completely different type of drivers license for non drivers..
And charge them like they are in an assigned risk pool and force the passenger to have some visual warning system so people can keep their distance..
Or just rent out dad’s to sit in the car and scream at you to keep your hands on the wheel and pay attention to the road....

LOL!! I turned in on by mistake on my Ford some months back, and I had to stop the car cause I thought I had a flat Tire.
