San Francisco (socialist) Democrat says homelessness crisis in his district is ‘absolutely the result of capitalism’

San Francisco Supervisor Dean Preston claimed the city’s homelessness problems were “absolutely the result of capitalism,” and it was “counterproductive” to arrest people openly doing drugs.

Preston’s District 5 includes the Tenderloin District, an area known for its open-air drug market. Nearly half of the city’s homeless population lived in this district in 2022, the San Francisco Chronicle reported.

The Democratic Socialist supervisor argued his district was particularly affected by homelessness because of the country’s economic structure.

“I think what you’re seeing in the Tenderloin is absolutely the result of capitalism and what happens in capitalism to the people at the bottom rungs,” the local leader reportedly remarked in a new documentary by the UK outlet, UnHerd.

“The biggest driver of why folks are on the street is because they lost their jobs, income or were evicted from their homes, usually for not being able to pay the rent. So you have major landlords literally causing folks to lose their homes, and real estate speculation making it impossible for folks to find an affordable place to live,” he reportedly said in the interview.

Preston disagreed with the city’s “inconsistent” approach to arresting drug users and sweeping homeless encampments, arguing this was “completely counterproductive” and made things worse.

This method “has not made our city any safer. It’s actually made it less safe. It increases overdoses,” he claimed.

The city leader downplayed concerns by many local residents and business owners about the encampments and rampant drug-dealing in the area.

“I don’t think every instance of poverty or addiction or behavioral health issue is a safety threat to someone walking by. I mean, there’s a lot of people who are doing things that are very harmful to themselves on the streets, who aren’t necessarily a safety threat,” Preston remarked.

When was the last time any capitalists were in charge of San Francisco? The socialist Dean is now in charge and wants to cut $100 million out of the police department. Perfect. That should work.

It’s like Republicans being blamed for Chicago yet no Republican has been near the wheel there in over 40 years.

Preston acts like control of illegal drugs is a waste of money. The way to limit the control of drugs is to defund the police. He will do massive damage with his ideology so out of touch with reality.

“The biggest driver of why folks are on the street is because they lost their jobs, income or were evicted from their homes, usually for not being able to pay the rent."

Completely false. Homelessness is about mental illness and substance abuse. Economics plays almost no role in homelessness.

Just try to open up a new business in San Francisco and see how “capitalist” the thousands of state and local regulations are....and don’t forget to pay all your fees and taxes...but the poop in front of your door-step is free at least.

Lol.

Funny. We had capitalism long long before anywhere had any kind of problem with drug addled bums. Why is it that THE most left leaning/socialist city in the entire country is the one - of all places - that has been overrun by drug addled bums?

You simply don’t see this to anywhere near the same degree in small and medium sized towns those brutal capitalist red states. Its so odd. I just can’t figure it out.

We have seen it all, some touch hole San Fanciscan local politician demeaning the very economic system that creates the huge surplus from which his tax dollar lucre comes.

If we were communist then all we would need to do is sent the homeless to work camps and execute those who resist.Problem solved. Is that what this idiot Dean Preston wants?

Instead we have to listen to this crap. Sometimes I wish we had a magic "Shut UP " button.

The Homeless in San Francisco infringe the property rights of individuals and of businesses.

CLear them out, process them and arbitrarily put them into institutions that will help their various drug addictions and mental challenges , instead if paying idiot mouth pieces like this touch hole Dean Preston.

Its just all that can be done.Make the City work for the majority of the population rather than standing in sh*t up to your knees, idiot Dean Preston.

Watch the Touch hole.THats what these commie Dean Preston's are.Preston needs for once to stand in front of the cannon.

Massive deflection. San Francisco is now a total civic failure. Huge budget deficits through abysmal mismanagement of elected officials failure to fulfill their civic obligations.

The state is the same. Huge budget shortfall in the coming year wiping out a 30-year surplus.

These ‘leaders’ are simply plundering their treasuries while casting blame anywhere they can to deflect from their malfeasance and corruption.
