GTA 6 publisher suggests games should be paid for per hour played

The CEO of Rockstar owner Take-Two has talked about changing the way video games are paid for.

Grand Theft Auto 6’s first trailer is fast approaching, after developer Rockstar announced it’ll reveal the first glimpse of the game in ‘early December’. Exactly when is still unknown, but The Game Awards on the 8th seem a strong possibility.

The game’s price is also of interest, although it’ll almost certainly cost £69.99, which is what most new AAA games are priced at now.

But during a recent investment call Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick said that big budget video games should be more expensive the longer they are.

Although I'm done buying games and am satisifed with playing older games, it's obvious to me that he favours streaming games so people don't have any CD's to own.

There is no game on earth that I would pay per hour to play. I like to play games and replay them, if they are interesting to me.

Makes sense with how greedy software companies are now. What I used to be able to buy and use indefinitely is now pay per year subscription. It’s highway robbery and no one seems to care.

I remember when games were 25 cents but you had to put in more quarters whenever you got to "Game Over."

The entire world of business software has gone to the rental/subscription model.

I’m not a gamer, so have no insight there, but being a “forward” and consumer-focused industry, am surprised they haven’t done this much earlier

I occasionally play GTA5 on a hand-me-up (from my son) PS4, but I have to subscribe to pay the online version.

From what I've seen from YouTube videos, the online version of GTA5 is nothing but hackers blowing up non-hackers, which isn't very fun.

But there are a lot of GTA5 missions that have been added over the years that are only available in the online version of the game.

If I ever get a hand-me-up PS, then I might buy a copy of GTA6 for the scripted mode play.

There is even engineering software that is that way now.
You don’t get the upgrade; it all shuts down. The upgrade is almost always a minor improvement and certainly not worth the upgrade cost.

It’s pure greed. They know GTA6 is the most anticipated game in years and it will sell huge numbers especially if they don’t bow to the woke mob. I hate the all digital trend. You own nothing and no used option.

Absolutely agree. No online crap for me. If I can’t have my own copy and run it offline, forget it.

So Grand Theft Auto wants to steal from their best fans.
How is that a workable business model?

Woot! Maybe he should design standup consoles that provide 3-5 minutes of gameplay for a small deposit like 25 cents … GTA frogger but this time you’re the car trying to squash as many frogs as possible.

They are even engineering AI into the games, so you never get the same game.

Just for reference, I’m still playing Diablo. A game I have played at least 300 times before. My objective is to get all the characters to level 50. The monk is the most difficult, because he has no range attack.

Right, l am really down on streaming games. We finally have Consoles/TV’s that can give us near PC graphics which you are not going to get with streaming. Too many times we have made the quality for convenience trade off.

The rise of online multiplayer games with a diminutive lone player option was
the end of gaming for me.

I also preferred first person shooter which was ruined with the addition of the
barely controllable npc as 'allies'.

I have never before seen a company as universally reviled by its customers as Autodesk. Microsoft may be second place, but it is a distant second.

Although, thirty years I liked the RPG games. I’ve taken a preference for strategy games, like Civ 3.

A good site to download older games is www.gog.com.

You can download most pc games there and bypass the upcoming subscription model altogether.

“I’m not a gamer, so have no insight there, but being a “forward” and consumer-focused industry, am surprised they haven’t done this much earlier”

You don’t have to be a gamer to be trapped into using for pay. It’s been in for years. Ever heard of iTunes, Napster, Spotify, Deezer, Pandora, Amazon, Apple, Tidal...? Or maybe a combination like films or general entertainment programming such as, in the United States, Cinemax, HBO, MGM+, Showtime, and Starz, but such services can also include those devoted to sports, as well as adult entertainment. And that’s where it really sticks out on a one for show payment. Ever watch “rassling,” boxing, or concert specials? You do it now if you use any of these. So it isn’t out of reach to find them trying to cash in on another highway. It’s up to the people to lead them away from their cash nirvana by not using the services. The ploit of Disney+ is a good example.

Yes, for some reason the customers just take it.
