58,000 pounds of ground beef products have been recalled due to possible E. coli contamination.
“American Foods Group, LLC, doing business as Green Bay Dressed Beef, LCC, a Green Bay, Wis. establishment, is recalling approximately 58,281 pounds of ground beef products that may be contaminated with Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC) O103,” the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced.

“The products were produced on Aug. 14, 2023, and sent to Georgia, Michigan and Ohio wholesalers,” NBC 5 DFW reports.
From the USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service:
The raw, ground beef items were produced on Aug. 14, 2023. The following products are subject to recall [view labels]:
Approximately 80-lb. cases containing 10-lb. plastic tubes (chubs) of “90050 BEEF FINE GROUND 81/19” with lot code D123226026. Approximately 80-lb. cases containing 10-lb. plastic tubes (chubs) of “20473 BEEF HALAL FINE GROUND 73/27” with lot code D123226027. Approximately 80-lb. cases containing 10-lb. plastic tubes (chubs) of “20105 BEEF FINE GROUND 73/27” with lot code D123226027. The products subject to recall bear establishment number “EST. 18076” inside the USDA mark of inspection. These items were shipped to distributors in Georgia, Michigan and Ohio.
The problem was discovered when FSIS was notified that a sample collected by a state public health partner tested positive for the presence of E. coli O103. There have been no confirmed reports of adverse reactions due to consumption of these products.
Many clinical laboratories do not test for non-O157 STEC, such as O103 because it is harder to identify than STEC O157:H7. People can become ill from STECs 2-8 days (average of 3-4 days) after consuming the organism.
Most people infected with STEC O103 develop diarrhea (often bloody) and vomiting. Some illnesses last longer and can be more severe. Infection is usually diagnosed by testing of a stool sample. Vigorous rehydration and other supportive care is the usual treatment; antibiotic treatment is generally not recommended. Most people recover within a week, but, rarely, some develop a more severe infection. Hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), a type of kidney failure, is uncommon with STEC O103 infection. HUS can occur in people of any age but is most common in children under 5 years old, older adults and persons with weakened immune systems. It is marked by easy bruising, pallor and decreased urine output. Persons who experience these symptoms should seek emergency medical care immediately.
Distributors and other customers who have purchased these products for further processing should not use them or further distribute them. These products should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase.

NBC 5 DFW reports:
American Foods Group, LLC — which does business as Green Bay Dressed Beef — did not respond to TODAY.com’s request for comment.
The USDA says there have been no confirmed reports of reactions related to the consumption of the products being recalled.
Products that are being recalled have establishment numbers inside the USDA mark of inspection, which read “EST. 18076.”
The products being recalled come in the form of 10-pound plastic tubes or chub packs, typically used to pack meat materials like sausages and hamburgers.

I can’t afford ground beef. Hope ground turkey isn’t the next recall . I’ll be eating meatless chili.
I don’t see how incidents like this can be avoided. Now and then it’s inevitable that something will go wrong, considering the scale on which we process food now.
It’s surprising that it doesn’t happen more often.

If they find a problem in a batch processed at a certain facility, they probably recall all of it out of caution.
I am not sure I trust them saying its dangerous anymore. We already know they want to kill off cattle AND not have normal people eat meat anymore.
I get all my beef and pork from a local cattle ranch - costs a bit more but I know its origin and travels.
Well, I think the meat company would rather deal with the recall than with a huge lawsuit - or many of them.
And this kind of thing has happened with other products, like sprouts, lettuce, scallions, etc. It’s not just meat. (We can’t even buy sprouts around here at the supermarket anymore.)

As usual my Michigan is in the danger zone. Last year it was I think 3 in a row including a salad fixings bag I had just purchased but not opened, with serial numbers to match.
Punish the Michigan Dems, not me.
