Cassowary (Casuarius)

Cassowaries are the only members of the family Casuariidae and belong to the order Casuariiformes, which also includes the emu. Three species (counted by some experts as six), each with several races, live in habitats that span parts of Australia and New Guinea. The cassowary has been known to kill human beings with slashing blows of its feet, as the innermost of its three toes bears a long daggerlike nail.

I’ve seen cassowaries crossing the road in northeast Australia. There are signs telling you to leave if they are seen or evidence they are in the area. Interesting fact: the males take care of the young, not the female. Female leaves as soon as they are born.

I’ve also seen ostriches, emu, and great horned owls in the wild.

Which reminds me, yesterday Clay Travis was laughing about a story where a woman said a snake fell out of the sky and hit her - then a hawk attacked to take the snake.

Clay Travis thought it was made up. Anyone who ever lived in old Florida on on a Mangrove knows hawks pick up snakes and small critters and if they’re fighting too much they drop them on the ground for 30 or 40 feet to stun their prey then sweep down to pick them up. I’ve seen it happen - /... and Travis - if you’re pushing a book tell us why WE would benefit from reading it... NOT why it would make you feel better... You’re great Travis but that sell was a fail.

The Cenezoic Era is known as the Age of Mammals, but for much of it, dinosaurs (or at least their descendents) remained the dominant predators: Terror Birds.

I was surprised to see Barred Owls on the list. We have some in the woods behind our house. In previous years, I’ve captured nice photos of them. I think both of those are dead now, with only their offspring hanging around more recently.
