States with initiative or referendum
Ballotpedia ^

Posted on 08/09/2023 11:11:40 AM PDT by MinorityRepublican

Twenty-six states have initiative and/or veto referendum processes at the statewide level. Washington, D.C., also has initiative and referendum processes. The availability of the powers at the local level varies by jurisdiction depending on state and local laws.

The initiative process allows citizens to propose a new statute or constitutional amendment.

The referendum process allows citizens to refer a law that passed the legislature to the ballot for voters to decide whether to uphold or repeal the law.

The following states have initiative and/or veto referendum processes at the statewide level:

Alaska Arizona Arkansas California Colorado Florida Idaho Illinois Maine

Personally it should be duly elected represenatives who change and vote on the constitution of a state.

Referendums should be illegal.

“Referendums should be illegal.”

Then those states can hold referendums that call for making referendums illegal.

2014 California Proposition 47

You can steal in California as long as it's under $950.

Well, abortion during the first trimester is a position taken by a majority of women.

But when it comes to partial birth abortion, or killing a baby at birth, that's another politcal position.

It's a difficult poltical situation.

It should be part of the legislative process. Vote out pro-life politicians. And vote for pro-choice. Then legalize abortion in the state you live in through legislation.

Exactly, it should be up to the states.

I would vote against a pro-abortion polician.

That's the way it should be.

It's too easy to manipulate the result when you are going through a referendum. If Republicans are smart, they need to amend their state constitutions now to get rid of it. Otherwise, the Democrats will start to use it often as their "loophole".

Thank you for posting MinorityRepublican.

"Referendums should be illegal."

Just like the states require licensed drivers to first pass a written road laws test, the states should require everybody to first pass a state and federal constitutions voter's qualification test before being allowed to vote.

In fact, local schools should make passing state and federal constitutions tests a requirement for graduating from high school and enrolling in college.

Well, laws and policies on abortion, are being enacted through the states. With Roe vs. Wade overturned, liberal states are enacting liberal abortion laws. Some more conservative states have stricter abortion laws.

Things are happening state by state, though not always going in the pro-life direction. Not even all conservatives want absolute bans on abortion. Which is why we see states enacting laws banning abortion after a certain number of weeks, and/or with exceptions for rape and incest and life of the mother.

That can never happen, because this idea is too reminiscent of the old literacy tests administered in the old South, to keep black people from voting.

I'm fine with every state legalizing abortion as long as they don't put it up through the referendum in their state. Our founders were against democracy for a reason.

The referendum process became popular in the early 20th Century due to the Populist and Progressive movements. These movements emphasized direct democracy and proposed popular override of state legislatures, which were seen as corrupt and business dominated. Part of the same movement involved the passage of the 17th Amendment, which ended the state legislatures choosing U.S. Senators.
