Twenty or so years ago while in Oregon and not knowing the law, I got out of the car to pump gas and yelled at the gas station worker that was running to the pump.
Yep. In 2007, by sheer habit, I got out of the car to pump gas off of I-5 south of Portland, and the attendant was trying to do it for me. Then I realized that the nanny state was present.

I had the same experience.
My friend did that also, and the guy said “What are you, a PRINCESS?”
I had a similar experience of seeing an attendant run out, but they were yelling at me.
When I relocated for work to the PNW, I had to get out of the car anyway to use the gas card at the pump and enter mileage, etc..
So, I stood out there with the attendant most times..
But it’s a little ridiculous having to wait for an attendant at a busy station to get back to your car when the pump has done its business and filled you up, and you want to get on your way..
But when in Portlandia...
