Is there a cast iron fix?

I forgot my cast iron skillet on the burner and now it's blistered. Do I have to get rid of it??

If the pan has cooled and the blistering is peeling, you should be able to work the whole pan down using a lye soak or sandpaper and then re-season the pan.

If the pan blistered and cracked/chipped...toss it.

Cast iron cookware is pretty durable - until it gets a chip or a crack.

Try contacting Lodge. They make most of the popular cast iron cookware sold in the US.

Cast iron lasts a long rime but is not indestructible.

It’s not warped or cracked ... it’s just got this pebbley, blistered stuff on the interior surface.

Some of it is light and flakey and I dusted that stuff off...no problem underneath it.

Video about dealing with flaking seasoning. Kind of fun since the host is a cowboy. He uses table salt to abrade the peeling. He seems to have some good tips about seasoning, too.

I hate to give up that skillet, if I don’t have to! When I price the same one now, it’s about double what I paid for mine, way back

Actually, some years ago I had surgery on my wrist and lifting that thing is a real effort, but it’s still a great skillet

I wouldn’t bother trying to resurface enameled cast iron, but regular cast iron is easy. Sand off all of the flaked/blistered stuff, right down to bare metal, getting it as smooth as you want (smoother is better, IMO). A palm sander works fine. Inspect it VERY CAREFULLY for cracks. If you see any cracking, even the tiniest, toss it. Then reseason it by your favorite method. The Lodge website has plenty of information on this.

I’ve had my cast iron skillet for almost 50 years, though I no longer use it every day. My mother had a 70-year skillet, but I don’t know where it went after she died.

Reddit has a pretty good sub for cast iron. You can post photos of the damage and there are some pretty good guys who will most likely give you some good advice.
