Study improves prediction of therapy response in patients with metastatic renal cell carcinoma (Simple C-reactive protein (CRP) and albumin levels provided much more accuracy)

Dr. Niklas Klümper and Dr. Jonas Saal demonstrated a significant improvement in predicting the response to therapy in metastatic renal cell carcinoma by incorporating the level of inflammation, which was assessed using two straightforward blood parameters, alongside the conventional imaging-based approach.

The research group led by Dr. Klümper has now been able to show that the investigation of two inexpensive and widely available inflammatory markers in the blood (C-reactive protein (CRP) and albumin) significantly improves the prediction of therapy response in patients with metastatic renal cell carcinoma, especially in the large group of patients with disease control in the first follow-up (>80%). The authors concluded both radiologic imaging and complementary analysis of inflammation levels should be used for monitoring in patients with metastatic renal cell carcinoma in the future.

"Our novel approach for enhanced therapy monitoring and prediction of treatment response is based on the combination of imaging and the assessment of inflammation level through the collection of two simple blood parameters: CRP and albumin integrated into the well-known modified Glasgow Prognosis Score (mGPS). Our study's findings are derived from patient cohorts participating in two separate randomized trials focused on metastatic renal cell carcinoma," said Dr. Niklas Klümper.

The mGPS is determined by assigning one point for an elevated serum CRP concentration (> 10 mg/L) and, only in patients with elevated CRP, a second point for decreased serum albumin (< 35 g/L). Patients are then categorized as low risk (0 points), intermediate risk (1 point), and high risk (2 points).

"Both blood parameters are widely available and inexpensive to determine, and thus can be immediately integrated into clinical practice worldwide to improve therapy monitoring of cancer patients. Improved prediction of treatment failure could better identify patients who could benefit from a change or intensification of therapy," said Dr. Jonas Saal.

C-reactive protein (CRP) and albumin are very easy to get, and should now be used with these patients to determine effectiveness of current therapy, hopefully very early, allowing quick changes to the therapy.

They still need to use imagining to get the size.

I have CRP and ESR(Sediment Rate) tests for inflammation almost monthly. They are very good predictors of inflammation. I have Giant Cell Arteritis and keeping inflammation down with prednisone is the only known treatment long term.

If anyone here suffers from GCA let me know what you do.

There are multiple supplements that can reduce CRP levels.

Have you tried any?

Yes I’ve taken probably all of them, fish oil, bromelain, flax, chia etc. The steroid keeps my levels in check for now and I am a new patient to this disease so I’ve been working thru new diet and supplement regimens, anti inflammatory diet foods and making sure I don’t gain weight on the prednisone. Also been walking 3 miles most days. My CRP level is supposed to be under 10 and I was at 153 when diagnosed, Sed Rate was supposed to be under 12 I think, and I was at 96. Giant Cell Arteritis is an auto immune disease that causes inflammation in the temporal arteries causing headaches, jaw pain, head tingling and can lead to blindness and stroke so its very important to get those levels down and keep them in check.

If you ever get a headache on a Sunday while watching football and it doesn’t go away for 3 months, you may have GCA. Get checked before you wake up blind or worse. It’s a disease most don’t know about.

Please review threads I’ve posted on GlyNAC and Taurine.

These make the two major antioxidants our bodies need, and used to make a lot of, when younger, glutathione and superoxide dismutase (SOD).

Nestle bought the official right to market Glycine and NAC together, from Baylor University. They say to take 600 mg of Glycine and 600 mg of NAC, together, twice a day. I take more than that. One study used 7,000 mg of each a day, but that seems excessive for my use.

Tauine was used in three doses of 500 mg each, increasing SOD over 20%. I take double that, and they suggested more taurine would make more SOD.

There are other supplements that you didn’t mention that could help, but I’d look into these two, first.

Also, eat lots of cooked mushrooms, and drink the liquid left behind.

Mushrooms are the best source of ergothioneine, a backup antioxidant to the other two. I have some studies on this here, too.
