In a dramatic scientific first, researchers have created synthetic human embryos without using sperm or an egg.
No one knows if these embryonic structures — created from stem cells — could develop into a viable living organism, or what that organism might be like.
But the breakthrough is sure to ignite furious ethical, legal and scientific debate. The synthetic embryo models had primordial cells that could eventually develop into egg and sperm cells.

Has this work been done with lower animals like dogs or chimps or did they just start with humans?

Maybe I’m missing something, but what value to humanity is there in creating embryos without sperm or egg?
We know how the reproductive system works. There is no shortage of sperm cells or eggs cells to make it work. We can create embryos with the plentiful sperm and eggs that are available.
We can even create embryos the old fashioned way, without having scientists in a lab involved.

If there’s no egg or sperm… what’s the genetic material? Or did they revert it from existing cells?
This technology will not last 10 years.
A simple nuclear exchange can send us all back to the middle ages overnight.
