How long does it takes a banana peel to decompose in landfill? | 2 Years
ECO Family Life ^ | none given | none given

Banana peel that ends up in regular landfill with other waste products including plastic can take up to 2 years to break down. Banana peels need the right temperature and combination of bacteria, fungi and oxygen to break down organically. Banana peels that are covered with garbage will break down anaerobically releasing methane into the atmosphere.

Methane is a substance that adds to the ozone layer, capturing sunlight and heat in the earth. This causes the earth to heat up quicker. While one banana peel won’t make a lot of difference but millions of bananas thrown into landfill causes lots of methane to be release into the air and earth.

Huh, back in the late 70's, "scientists" said we were all going to die because hairspray and other aerosols were destroying the ozone layer.

Oh well I guess the talking point of today is the evil banana.

Not only are bananas bad for the environment, they can be lethal weapons. Many years ago I saw a training video about that.

So just wondering.......I’m guessing most banana peels would be inside a plastic garbage bag, how would that methane escape into the atmosphere? I don’t think the plastic bag disolves too.

Banana peels aren't the problem. Birds and wild animals poop all over the world and, when it decomposes, methane is given off.

This must be stopped ASAP.

Back in the day, circa the late 80s, there were all sorts of stories about how disposable diapers were filling our landfills. I even saw a show where they hired a team of archaeologists to do a formal excavation of a landfill to document what was really filling landfills. The biggest contributor turned out to be newspapers. The diaper panic seemed to die off after that.

A banana peel will change from a nice shade of yellow to dark brown by the time you bring it home from the supermarket.

I can see it now! Joe Slob tosses a banana peel in the garbage. It goes to a dump where a polar bear slips on the peel, falls, splits his head open and bleeds on the nearby ice berg which melts and floods the earth killing all humanity!!!! All because Joe Slob needed to eat the forbidden fruit!!!!! (AlGore)

It’s even longer if you buy those plastic bananas for your family. Yeah, they last longer and never break down.

How long does it take a banana boater voter ballot that the Dung Beetle Party uses to decompose in a landfill? There are millions of them hitting the landfill at one time after the far-left jughead is declared the winner by the fake news boyz on FNC, MSNBC, and CNN.

There’s a volcano burping in Mexico right now that is putting out more greenhouse gases than 100 trillion bananas.
