Mississippi went from being ranked the second-worst state in 2013 for fourth-grade reading to 21st in 2022. Louisiana and Alabama, meanwhile, were among only three states to see modest gains in fourth-grade reading during the pandemic, which saw massive learning setbacks in most other states.
The turnaround in these three states has grabbed the attention of educators nationally, showing rapid progress is possible anywhere, even in areas that have struggled for decades with poverty and dismal literacy rates. The states have passed laws adopting similar reforms that emphasize phonics and early screenings for struggling kids.

In 2017, the state of New York passed a law requiring prospective school teachers to take a literacy test to get their license, but repealed it the following year because 36 percent of whites, 54 percent of Hispanics and 59 percent of blacks failed on the first try.

Finally! Now they need to get rid of “the new math”
Paleocon modern Renaissance Man Jerry Pournelle was talking about this sort of thing 20+ years ago on his blog (arguably the first blog, and he hated the word). His wife, Roberta, was given the “unteachable” kids from the Los Angeles Unified School District and would have them reading well in a few months using phonics.
“Whoever took them away from using phonics in the first place is either evil or an idiot.”
As someone who understands Leftists, the proper answer is EVIL. This is based on the things that Leftists also want in this country, which include bringing us down a few notches compared to the rest of the world (we’re too wealthy for them and thus consume too many resources), and making sure that their voting base of uneducated people stays put and doesn’t migrate up to the Middle Class.
In order to fight the Left on education (and for that matter, ANY issue), we have to first accept them for what they are - which is PURE EVIL. Once that is accepted, then things become very easy - for if they squeal, as they do when being forced to teach phonics, we then know that phonics is the way to go. No different than when they squeal about our side preventing them from Grooming...absolutely no difference.
Let me guess.
Parents suddenly started teaching their children to read?
Suddenly all illegals were deported?
Suddenly all the kids came from two parent stable homes?
Suddenly the IQ of the children increased?
Or did teachers suddenly start teaching the way they should have been all along?
I have been pointing out for years that the reason schools are not able to teach kids the basics when they were able to do so in the past is because the teachers quit teaching.
But I was assured that this could not be it. It was everything BUT the teachers.
No. It wasn't.
When my kids entered the system 32 years ago, it was the first I witnessed and then researched the whole language system, as part of the child centered learning. I immediately thought it was intentional. I believe it came out of New Zealand and if ever something would produce a bunch of ill-behaved illiterates, this system would do it.
I home-schooled my two kids (as well as a few others) for a number of years and wound up creating my own reading/spelling/writing program, tutoring many children, and it paid for my kids to attend a quality Christian school. I pushed for years to get phonetic teaching back into the system, to no avail. The teachers were following this child-centered nonsense and whole language like it was a religion.
It was pronounced enough that the book "Why Johnny Can't Read" was published in 1955.
I still remember my now gone dear old Mother sitting me down on the couch in the evening back in 1965 going through the phonics cards. Helped me for sure. I read through all the Sailor Jack paperbacks from school in no time.

All of our public school end of the year tests went up at least 5-10% just because ed policy and teaching was so bad during COVID.

Evil for sure. It’s been destroying kids and their futures for quite some time now, along with revisionist history and ‘new math’ among others. We need total reform of our education system, and those responsible for destroying the good system we had should pay a high price.

It was evil. "Sight word" reading was invented to teach some minimal reading capability to retarded people who couldn't comprehend phonics. Imposing it on people of normal or above normal intelligence is a deliberate effort to mentally cripple them.
