I do wonder why Putin was not able to just steamroll over them.

Other than that, I don’t see any reason for the USA to be involved.

Is it perhaps because we were and are currently involved, that Putin was not able to just steamroll over them?

Pretty simple. The Ukrainians refused to be steamrolled over. The Ukrainians surprised everyone.
