Frequent fried food consumption linked to anxiety and depression (Specifically, french fries)
Medical Xpress / Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences ^ | April 27, 2023 | Bob Yirka / Anli Wang et al

A team of food scientists has found a possible link between frequent fried food consumption and increased levels of anxiety and depression in consumers. In their study, the group describes analyzed patient data for 140,728 people.

The research team noted that prior research efforts established links between western dietary patterns and mental health issues. Suspecting at least some of the evidence could be traced back to frequent consumption of fried foods, the team compared rates of reported anxiety and depression with accounts of eating behaviors that include frequent consumption of fried foods.

They found that those who reported eating a lot of fried foods were more likely to be diagnosed with symptoms of anxiety and/or depression. More specifically, they found that symptoms increased by between 7% and 12% in people who reported eating such foods, and that the greatest risk seemed to be associated with eating fried potatoes in the form of french fries.

Exploring why eating such foods might increase the chances of mental health issues, the team isolated acrylamide, which they describe as a food-processing contaminant that appears when food is fried.

They tested the impact of acrylamide on zebrafish and found it reduced their eagerness to explore new territory and reduced their sociability, both signs of scototaxis and thigmotaxis, which are fish behaviors believed to be similar to anxiety and depression in humans. They also found that consumption of acrylamide downregulated expression of tjp2a, which has been found to play a role in the permeability of the blood-brain barrier.

The research team suggests that more work is required to definitively prove that frequent consumption of fried foods leads to mental health issues—they acknowledge that it was possible people in the data group they studied were consuming more fried foods because they were suffering from anxiety or depression.

I had a roommate that ate at least one super size McDonald’s french fries every two or so days

He was both anxious and depressed, for a great many years, and he kept that diet.

However, he was relatively thin.

I urge all FReepers to rid their diets of “french fries,” which are soggy with nasty seed oils and can stay lodged in parts of your colon for MONTHS.

I made Croquetas De Jamón and a salad for a light dinner with my daughter. That was some crispy goodness. Then I started reading news on FR. That’s proof positive: eating fried food leads to reading about leftist freaks destroying our nation.

At my house, we buy the frozen “fries”, and bake them in the air fryer.

Cooked for the right length of time, they are as crispy as anyone could desire, without the nasty oil.

I was a lot less depressed when I could eat french fries a couple times a day. (tater tots also filled any emotional void I might have)

Of course they did.

Seems like some people enjoy taking all the fun out of life.

Most fast-food fries have been crap for the last 30 years, when most of them switched to soybean oil. Soy allegedly lowers testosterone levels, so that might be the mechanism at play if the anxiety/depression thing is real.

I do like Five Guys’ fries (peanut oil) and In-N-Out fries (sunflower oil, I think).

Oh FFS. These so called scientists can’t even understand causation versus correlation.
Depression symptoms often include overeating things like fried foods.
What’s next? Researchers find eating pint after pint of Ben and Jerry’s (spit) or Häagen-Dazs ice cream causes depression, suicide, or owning an abnormally large amount of cats?

Well no wonder I’m so sad...lol

This statistical conclusion seems a little dubious to me though...

I like to bake a couple of potatoes and then leave them in the fridge overnight. Then in the morning I slice them up and fry them in lard or olive oil till they are a bit crispy.

Best taters ever :-)

People have eaten fried foods for generations and been happy. That tells me whatever negatives they have found are more related to how fried foods are prepared in the modern age, preservatives, additives, hydrogenated oils and whatever.

“so that might be the mechanism at play if the anxiety/depression thing is real.”

It isn’t, not in terms of causation.

When they determine that the word “French” used to name these potato delights is the cause of climate change, that will be the end of them. The Woke will make sure those who bootleg the making of them will experience severe consequences.

I’ve made them fresh a home several times, cutting by hand, double frying in peanut oil. I hear duck fat is the best. The result is comparable to Five Guys.
