Pink Floyd - Seamus (Mademoiselle Nobs) Live Pompeii
Out On The YouTube ^

Posted on 04/18/2023 5:14:59 PM PDT by SamAdams76

Before the band Pink Floyd went into the stratosphere with "Dark Side Of The Moon" in 1973 (half a century ago!), they released an album called "Meddle", said to be a soundtrack for a non-existent movie, in 1971.

Dominated by the PF classic "Echoes", which takes up the entire Side Two of the album (back when albums had sides), there was sort of a throwaway track called "Seamus" at the end of Side One, that was mostly sung by a dog.

The record executives were horrified by this track and did their darnedest to get it removed from the album entirely but somehow, Pink Floyd got it to stick on the album.

The original album version of "Seamus" was sung (or rather howled) by a border collie owned by the leader of rock band Humble Pie, Steve Marriott.

Yes, Humble Pie is the same band that featured guitarist Peter Frampton, who would later rocket to solo super-stardom on the strength of his double-live album from 1976 ("Frampton Comes Alive!").

Now the album version of the song "Seamus" is done in a country blues style featuring the howling of this otherwise unassuming border collie. Many Pink Floyd fans consider this a throwaway cut, but for some (such as myself), it did grow on your over time. Especially if you are a lover of dogs, like I am.

Featured in this post is the one and only "live" video version of this song, recorded in Pompeii, Italy during the 1972 timeframe.

Now this live version was recorded by "Nobs", of the Borzoi breed (Russian hunting dog), owned by an Italian woman named Madonna Bouglione (the daughter of circus director Joseph Bouglione).

The results are...better than expected.

But you be the judge of that.

He died way too young. His voice was awesome and fit their music so well.

Love Meddle. “Fearless” is one of my favorites. “Echoes” too of course. I love that album. When I’m writing code and need to get in the zone, I frequently go to Meddle.

I think Seamus is one of the few songs I never really liked much.

This has become one of my favorite PF songs. I thought David wrote it, as he has performed it on his solo tours, but Roger wrote it.

Probably the most talented frontman there was. And no slouch on guitar. Could do any style of music and kill it.

Mine too. Then I listen to Animals and change my mind. Then I listen to Dark Side and change my mind. So it goes for The Wall, Wish You Were Here, and even The Final Cut. Heck, sometimes Division Bell is my favorite (except Keep Talking).

And there was a lot of hints that Marriott and Frampton were going to do something together, if not resurrect Humble Pie, before Marriott’s death.

Echoes is an incredible piece of music. I have been listening to it since I first bought the album back in 19700000something.

So glad that Gilmour and Richard got to perform Echoes that one last time before Richard passed. Their two voices blended so well on those early PF albums.

This is a great Richard Wright song, from the early days.

Obscured By Clouds…

Tomorrow that will be my favorite. At least for a bit.

Great album. The live version of Astronomy Domine on this one is my favorite and I think was actually sang by Syd Barrett although he had been out of the band for over a year when Ummagumma was released.
For any Roger Waters fans check out Music From the Body. It was a sound track he did with Ron Geesin in 1970. Very innovative and obscure.
