A couple visiting the Bay Area had two different cars broken into in the same area in the same day.
Shin Kim, a Berkeley graduate, flew to the Bay Area with his wife earlier this month and wanted to show her around. That all changed when the couple stopped at an In-N-Out Burger near the Oakland airport.
"A security guard calls us out asking if the minivan, which was our rental car, was ours," Kim said. "We went out and saw that the three glasses in the back were shattered and all of our luggage was gone."
Many of their possessions were stolen out of the rental car.
"I really did not expect it to happen during the day right in front of the store, right in front of the restaurant," Kim said. "It was very shocking."
The couple then rented a Tesla and made a plan to replace some of their stolen items. They had to go back to the same In-N-Out parking lot to meet the worker who was going to replace the broken windows on the van.
Moments after they arrived, thieves hit the Tesla.
"I turn around and I see these robbers trying to break into the car," Kim said.
"So I held the robber and another robber came out from their vehicle and then pulled a gun on me," Kim said. "As soon as I saw the gun, it was really scary. I just had to hide behind the Tesla."

Stupid should hurt.

In Oakland?
Whoever is surprised by this?
I won’t set foot there and have told my family to NEVER make plans anywhere in the area. When I see the “Fruitvale” exit on the 880, I step on the gas.
Smashing in the windows of cars is also common in San Francisco - often nothing is taken, just the glass smashed in. Happened to my daughter’s friend’s very old car - there was nothing in the car to steal.
Apparently it’s gotten so bad in that area that people put signs up in their car stating there is nothing in the car to steal - doesn’t stop the glass smashing - they do it b/c they enjoy it and will suffer little to no consequences if caught.
Bad move hiding behind the Tesla. Had they taken a couple of pot shots at you they could have screwed up the battery in that thing.

Only TOTAL IDIOTS rent cars in California without trunks. What did they think was going to happen? Absolute dummies.
Welcome to California, where thieves are ignored and lawlessness abounds
Embrace it Bay Area. This is what you vote for consistently.
WTH was the “security guard” supposed to be “guarding”????
“WTH was the “security guard” supposed to be “guarding”????”
Likely paid off by the thieves, or at least threatened.
Just like NYC in the 80s....when BMW stood for Break My Windows
“Only TOTAL IDIOTS...”
On the other hand, he was going to In-and-Out, so definitely some hope for him.
My step daughter and her guy are headed to SF this month. We had a family photo shoot with an Asian dude who had recently arrived in Houston from SF...he heard her destination and asked “Why you wanna go there?” it STINKS!
I hope they survive....
Doesn’t matter if it has a trunk or not—they break the windows and ransack the car.
Welcome to Oakland, take it with you when you leave.
he’s there to notify victims they have been robbed
Yeah...That’s what it seems to be....
” they do it b/c they enjoy it and will suffer little to no consequences if caught.”
Not exactly and only partially true.
They hit the side rearward windows so they can reach through and release the rear seatback and pull it forward to get a quick peek into the trunk. looking for valuables that way.
“Shin Kim, a Berkeley graduate”
Oh my sides....
Still want to “show your wife around”? Dummy. On top of all this I guarantee he still wears a mask and has had the jab and 3+ boosters.
