Dan Sabo, correspondent of The Guardian,cites his source which states that Russians suffer most significant losses in the city of Bakhmut in Donetsk Oblast.
Russia is sustaining “1200, 1300 even 1500” casualties a day in its current offensive, mostly in Bakhmut. Killed to wounded ratio is one to three - senior Nato official, speaking on condition of anonymity. In particular, there is more and more dissatisfaction with what is happening in the Kremlin towers. There is an increasingly grim awareness of the outlook, namely the geopolitical catastrophe of the Putin regime. Ukraine loses “an order of magnitude less” soldiers but specific numbers were not revealed. In addition to this, NATO estimates that “several thousand” shells are used by both sides every day.
NATO cannot predict for how long the battle of Bakhmut will continue. At the moment, heavy fighting is ongoing on the frontline in the city along the Bakhmutka river which has turned into a “killing zone”.
As of the beginning of March, Western intelligence estimated Russia’s losses in the fights for the city of Bakhmut in Donetsk Oblast to be 20,000-30,000 of recruits of the Wagner Group PMC in the last few months. Killed soldiers are estimated to be about a third of this quantity.
Then NATO estimated Russia’s losses in the battles for Bakhmut in Donetsk Oblast to be five times higher than Ukraine’s losses.
Ukrainian city of Bakhmut is suffering some of the fiercest fighting since Russia’s invasion began more than a year ago, with both sides claiming the battle for the city is essential to their victory. NBC News’ Erin McLaughlin has the story.

Ukraine has said that video released on Saturday shows how its forces had successfully targeted Russian tanks overnight.
The clip tweeted by Ukraine’s security service the SBU shows a bird’s eye view of military vehicles exploding after being hit from above.

“Nine or ten? TEN! That’s how many Russian tanks were destroyed by special forces of the SBU “White Wolves” in just one night!,” the SBU said on Telegram next to the clip, which as of Saturday afternoon had received more than 47,000 views.
The SBU said that an armored personnel carrier was also hit the in the strikes in the direction of Russian-occupied Donetsk. The video has not been independently verified and the exact location of the purported strikes was not mentioned. Newsweek has emailed Russia’s defense ministry for comment.
It comes after another video went viral allegedly showing Ukrainian forces striking one of Russia’s T-90 tanks, which are considered to be among the invaders’ most advanced equipment.

Ukrainian internal affairs advisor Anton Gerashchenko tweeted how his country’s National Guards brigade was among Ukraine’s forces which had “tracked down and destroyed the pride of Russian defense industry—the T90 Proryv tank.”
On Saturday, Kyiv held discussions with American officials about upcoming U.S. military assistance, including weapons and ammunition, the Ukrainian presidential chief-of-staff Andriy Yermak wrote on Telegram.
They discussed “the current situation at the front, combat operations in the most difficult directions, as well as about the urgent needs of the Ukrainian army,” Yermak wrote according to a translation.

Hague court warrant: main consequences for Putin

After the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague issued an arrest warrant for Russian President Vladimir Putin, who is accused of illegally deporting the population and children from Ukraine, Moscow said that this decision has no significance for Russia, and former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev called the warrant “toilet paper”.
But what will it mean for the rest of the world?
Despite the existence of an arrest warrant for Putin, the ICC does not have the authority to arrest suspects. Its jurisdiction extends only to countries that have signed and ratified the agreement establishing the court - the so-called Rome Statute. Russia is not a signatory to this agreement. As well as a number of other countries. Among the most famous exceptions, in addition to Russia, the United States, India and China.
However, as prosecutor general of Ukraine Andriy Kostin explained after the decision was made public, “from now on, the Russian president has the official status of a suspect in committing an international crime.”
And the ICC member states are required to comply with the warrant - if Putin is on their territory, they will have to hand it over to the court.
However, recently Putin does not travel to the countries that signed the Rome Statute. Over the past year, the Russian leader has visited Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Iran, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Armenia, Kyrgyzstan and Belarus. Of all of them, only Tajikistan, which is a member of the ICC, could extradite Putin to the ICC.
Putin is an exile and not only that
As Ukrainian international lawyer Serhiy Petukhov explained, an arrest warrant from the ICC will have a number of specific consequences for Putin.:
First, Putin is deprived of immunity as head of state - from now on, “he does not have the immunity from criminal prosecution that all other presidents of countries have.”
In addition, Putin will not be able to travel to most countries of the world, because 123 states are parties to the Rome Statute.
“These are not only Western states, but also many states that have traditionally been favorable to Russia or taken a neutral position. For example, it is not clear how Putin will now go to the BRICS summits, because both Brazil and South Africa should arrest him and send him to the Hague,” Sergey Petukhov wrote on Facebook.
The lawyer also believes that the ICC prosecutor broke the Russian propaganda narrative about the voluntary relocation of Ukrainians to Russia - first the UN Independent Commission, and now the ICC prosecutor pointed out that Russia forcibly takes children and moves them to its territory, which is a war crime.
In addition, the international lawyer believes, the arrest warrant for Putin indicates that the West will not agree to a “peace agreement” with Russia, and that Moscow’s attempts to undermine the coalition of Ukraine’s international partners will not bring results. And Russia’s return to the civilized world is possible only after being punished for war crimes committed.
At the same time, international experts say that with ICC arrest warrants for leaders of states who have immunity while they are in office, not everything is so clear.
There are no precedents for the extradition of a state leader who performs his duties yet, although the ICC has already issued similar warrants. However, there were two cases when suspects voluntarily appeared in court. We are talking about the president and vice-president of Kenya, recalls Gleb Bogush, an expert on international law at the University of Copenhagen.
“This is no more fantastic option than the prospect of his detention,” the lawyer believes.
Gleb Bogush also recalls that the fact that Russia itself does not recognize the ICC does not mean that President Putin or another Russian cannot be brought to justice in this Court - “no one has any doubts that, for example, in Russia it is possible to arrest a Dutch citizen who is accused by Russian law enforcement agencies,” the lawyer explains.
It will not be an obstacle for the court that The Crimes of which the ICC accuses Putin occurred on the territory of Ukraine, because it itself transferred the right to judge to the International Court of justice.
Symbolism and applied consequences
President Putin may indeed not be in the dock in the near future because of his immunity as head of state, says Kevin Jon Heller, another international lawyer at the University of Copenhagen. But immunity from arrest does not mean impunity for statesmen, the lawyer emphasizes.
So, now Putin visits only “friendly” countries that are unlikely to extradite him to the ISS. But the already limited movements of the Russian leader will become even more difficult, and the countries of the “Global South” will be less willing to deal with him.:
“I think Putin will have the status of an exile - at least among Western countries.”
At the same time, Sir Geoffrey Nice, the prosecutor who led the case in the International Court of justice against former Serbian President Slobodan Milosevic, also accused of war crimes, believes that the warrant from the ICC for Putin has more than just symbolic meaning.
According to him, this decision shows that there is enough evidence that Putin “is a criminal, that there is a war and it is criminal.”

Vladimir Putin is the third incumbent state leader to have an arrest warrant issued by the ICC. His predecessors are Sudanese leader Omar al-Bashir and Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi.
Al-Bashir received two warrants , in 2009 and 2010, on charges of genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity. These accusations related to the conflict in Darfur in 2003, which resulted in the death of more than 300 thousand people.
In 2020, Al-Bashir was removed from power, the current leaders of Sudan agreed to extradite him to the ICC, but this has not happened so far.
Gaddafi’s arrest warrant was issued by the ICC in 2011, when mass protests were taking place in Libya. However, just a few months later, the Libyan leader was killed and the case was closed.
In addition, as ICC prosecutor Karim Ahmad Khan recalled, in addition to the trial of Milosevic in the Hague, which at first no one believed, it is also worth mentioning the leader of Liberia, Charles Taylor, who was sentenced to 50 years behind bars, as well as Felicien Kabuga from Rwanda, who was arrested in 2020.

A Russian lawmaker who refused to stand when the Russian anthem started playing has been handed a summons to fight in Ukraine.
Alexander Lependin, deputy of the Maloyaroslavets District Assembly of Russia’s Kaluga region, remained seated when the “State Anthem of the Russian Federation” played during a session last month. He told local news outlets that his legs were tired after a gym session.
The official was subsequently ordered to go to a local military registration and enlistment office.
Hundreds of thousands of Russians were handed demands to report for military duty after Russian President Vladimir Putin declared a partial mobilization decree on September 21.
The conscription order supposedly targets reservists and ex-military personnel with “certain military specialties and relevant experience,” but those ineligible to be called up, including students, have also been mistakenly handed demands to serve in Ukraine.
Lependin told Gazeta.ru that on March 15 he declared himself unfit for service, and that he expects a decision on the matter will be made within a month.
The deputy told the news outlet that he didn’t stand up because the day before he had worked out excessively in the gym and his legs hurt. He also said that none of his colleagues had made any comments to him at the time.
“Not a single person from the audience was indignant, did not pull me up, did not ask if everything was in order,” he told RBC.
Vyacheslav Parfyonov, the head of the Maloyaroslavets district’s administration, said that the Lependin would also be held accountable through court. He told the Rise newspaper that a parliamentary ethics commission would consider what had happened and “make some kind of decision.”
Sergey Aksyonov, the Russian politician acting as head of the Russian-annexed Crimea since 2014, proposed stripping those who don’t stand up for the Russian anthem of their citizenship.
“I consider it necessary to raise the issue of deprivation of citizenship if a case of not standing up to the Russian anthem is documented. Why do you need citizenship if you do not stand up, do not respect the symbols of the state - the flag, the anthem,” Aksyonov was cited by state-run news agency RIA Novosti as saying.
Last October, Dmitry Baltrukov, a 43-year-old municipal deputy for Smolninskoe in St. Petersburg, was handed a summons after he appealed to the country’s parliament to remove Putin from power on the charge of high treason.
He and other deputies in the area called for Putin to be removed from power over the Ukraine war.
Baltrukov told Newsweek at the time that military registration and enlistment office workers and policemen came to his home, where his mother was, to hand him a summons, despite him having no military experience.
