Switches back and forth between old highway 40 and I-80: both a mess, but you can see what whiteout is like …

“Glad I finally bought a snow blower.”

And it snowed a lot afterwards? That’s not how it’s supposed to work. Must be a defective snow blower.

Mammoth Lakes/Mammoth Mtn. (top of) reporting 696” (58’) and 498” (41.5’) at main lodge. More on the way.

In 2017, much snow fell in May. That year, there was 220% of normal/average precipitation. 2018, saw 70% of normal, and 2019, was 140% of normal.

2020, 2021, and 2022, were subpar/below average - to way below average snow years.

Mammoth Mtn. reports: “We have received 498” of snow at Main Lodge this season and 646” at The Summit. The snow could be heavy at times.” And yes China Peak as well as Solitude in Colo. get a ton of snow.

Wonder if Newsome is doing anything to try to conserve all this precious water.

Surely there are enough brains to devise some means of diverting the inevitable runoffs from being lost into the pacific.

I’ve always been fascinated by the vast power of storms. Over 27,000 gallons is laid down per acre per inch of rainfall. Try this stat: the largest reservoir in the state is Lake Shasta, capacity 4.5 million acre feet. Since it started storming late in December, 1.4 million acre feet has been added to the lake. 450 billion gallons, give or take. And that’s just one reservoir, and, at 61% full because it is so huge and was so low, it’s lagging all other major reservoirs. We may have real problems if it warms too quickly come spring with the vast snowpack and full reservoirs

While the epic drought won’t be relieved any time soon, it is gratifying to hear about deep snowpack levels. Every bit helps.

Technically, no, it doesn’t. That’s how glaciation starts. Right where I am now, had over a mile of ice, just about 11,000 years ago. That’s just a split second ago, in geological terms.

Stockpiling a cache or maintaining a pantry of non-perishable food for emergencies is wise, “hoarding” on the other hand is actually a negative thing, that’s when people purchase or acquire unreasonable quantities, way more than they can use, refuse to share or even sell a necessary article. The complete opposite of what your Dad and neighbors were doing.
