Actress Christina Applegate Appears At Her Last Awards Show Amid Battle With Multiple Sclerosis

Actress Christina Applegate attended the 2023 Screen Actors Guild Awards in Los Angeles on Sunday, likely the last time she will attend an award show amid her ongoing battle with multiple sclerosis.

Applegate, 51, who was diagnosed with the neurodegenerative disease in 2021, appeared on the red carpet wearing a black gown while standing next to her daughter. She also had a cane with an “FU MS” sticker attached to the side.

The “Married With Children” alum said earlier this month that she was done with awards shows after the SAG Awards because she couldn’t imagine putting more energy into continuing to perform in her current condition.

“It’s my last awards show as an actor probably, so it’s kind of a big deal,” Applegate, 51, explained to The Los Angeles Times. “Right now, I couldn’t imagine getting up at 5 a.m. and spending 12 to 14 hours on a set; I don’t have that in me at this moment.”

Applegate revealed her diagnosis in 2021 but pushed on to complete the third and final season of her Netflix show “Dead to Me” — an effort she said was successful in part because of the support and friendship of co-star Linda Cardellini.

“I cry when I talk about Linda because I love her so much. The next person who gets to work with her, I hope they realize how incredibly lucky they are, because not only is she an incredible human but she’s a divine artist and is right there, present for you, no matter what,” Applegate said.

The “Anchorman” star said that the Netflix production crew was there for her as well, allowing her to take time off to process her diagnosis and begin treatment while helping her to work around obstacles the disease presents in real time.

“I was a wreck every day, but most of that wreck would take place in my trailer by myself. But there were times I’d break down on set and be like, ‘I can’t, we have to take a break, I need a half-hour,’ and everyone was so loving that it was okay,” she said.

Applegate recently revealed that in the 18 months since her diagnosis, she has gained nearly 40 pounds and relies on a cane to walk. She even attended her own Hollywood Walk of Fame ceremony barefoot, explaining that MS can cause instability and discomfort, especially when wearing shoes.

“I’m never going to accept this. I’m pissed,” she said at the time.

Virginia Kruta contributed to this report.

Tough disease to fight. Rough for the individual and the family.

Sad.

And yet a POS like soros keeps on ticking. Moloch’s diet of baby blood must be a hell of a preservative.

It’s sad. I feel so bad for her.

When I first found out that I would need a liver transplant, It wrecked me emotionally for a while. But I went to work every day.
Four years later, I received a new liver. I’m better, thanks to God above.
Her disease can’t be fixed, it’s just going to get worse.
A pretty lady. She is a great actor, and it’s sad when these things happen to people.

That’s sad to here that she has MS. Wouldn’t wish that upon even my worst enemy.

She really has good comedy chops, especially when she played Kelly Bundy. I couldn’t imagine anyone else in that role.

She’s as beautiful at 51 as she was in her teens.

She seems like a really nice IRL person.

Have a brother and first cousin with MS.

Brother aged 66 has had it 25 years plus. Cousin aged 70 has had it for 35 years.

They both struggle but can still get around.

VERY slow decline for them both.

She looks old for Hollywood 51, but not for normal person 51. Not a fan of anything she has been in, but I wish her the best fighting it.

A little, she's still beautiful, though.

My mom had the slow-decline version of MS. She managed to have some reasonably good times before she passed. I took her to a New York State Finger Lakes wine tasting tour, grandma and her went on a Carnival Cruise, all sorts of stuff like that.
