Cuba is really missing a huge opportunity to reform itself to create an attractive paradise for disaffected Americans. With the right changes they could lure a ton of people to the island. Enormous potential there IMHO.
“looking to retire soon, and sadly I am starting to think the best place to live is no longer the united states at all....don’t like the trend the country is on, and I don’t see it getting any better in my lifetime - if ever.”
We went through this process a while back. There is nowhere else. America is the world’s last chance. I already fled California 25 years ago and the rot followed me to where I live now.
I could move again. I will probably die before the rot gets to Texas or Mississippi. So maybe it’s a good move.
I’ll stay in the southwest thanks...I hate being cold..
No NJ?
I would like to live on a sailboat and just cruise where ever the wind takes me.
Huntsville rates a solid “Meh” from me. There are lots of ghetto areas that a high value city wouldn’t have. The Gulf Coast of Alabama around Orange Beach, Gulf shores, and Fairhope are much nicer places to live in AL.
Houses/apartments are much cheaper as long as you are not on the water. Just like here, the closer to the Med or Adriatic the more expensive.

This seems to be the Italian version of a Zillow listing site.
You can search by region. The search above is for Calabria(the tip of the boot across for Sicily).
Generally there are a lot more apartments for sale instead of stand alone houses. Newer buildings are worth more money.
Buildings with elevators are more expensive.
Like always LOOK for bars on the windows. That typically means an area you do not want to live.
This interest for me came up when I came across a YouTube channel called AHomeinItaly. This is run by a British expat offering real estate in the Abruzzo Region. Which is east of Rome down to the Adriatic. This is also a lesser expensive area.
I think some areas of Sicily have more crime. Keep in mind that the south gets pretty hot in the summer. The middle part of the country on the coastal plain is more moderate.
The country is very mountainous. So, there are a lot of villages that are tougher to get to. These are where you can
buy houses for under $100K.
In my area of AZ the growth is in every direction. New hotels, new home and road construction everywhere, new business and half the people we come in contact with just moved here. Personally, I'd like to see this growth slow down a bit.
List of places to avoid!
What places did you try?
Ann Arbor is a great place to live if you are a committed Communist.
There are some towns in italy with programs by which you can buy a house for very cheap provided you put some renovation effort into it. I don’t know if that can be your own ‘wood butchering’ or if you must hire a local who is not you.
Best place to live in the USA?
Wide open spaces, Deep in the Heart of Texas.
Not near San Antonio, Austin, DFW or Houston.
“Ann Arbor might be great place if you have kids in high-school to college age brackets. It is horrible place for retired folks. Housing is expensive and taxes are high compared to other states.”
Actually. the state and local tax burden in Michigan is lower than Texas and Florida — at least according to this study: https://taxfoundation.org/publications/state-local-tax-burden-rankings/.
Asheville’s not on the list?
original article:
https://studyfinds.org/best-places-to-live-in-usa-2023/
List:
1. Ann Arbor, Michigan
2. Raleigh, North Carolina
3. Huntsville, Alabama
4. Fayetteville, Arkansas
5. Colorado Springs, Colorado
I live in Northwest Arkansas, and it’s my favorite place I’ve lived ( grew up in Dallas, lived in San Jose for over 30 years, and retired to Arkansas). I like where I live just outside of Bentonville better than Fayetteville.
would think Honduras or Nicaragua would be good for retirement now. All their citizens left so there has to be some real bargains.
This is an excellent list. Simply excellent. Move to these places.
Do not, I repeat, do not move to Wyoming, Idaho or Utah. Stay the f*** away. Any place but these is much better. Move there.
State income tax makes a bigger dent in after tax income than difference in property tax. If property tax in Texas is $2500, and tax in another state is $2000 but you have to pay $3000 in state income tax, which is better?
I have lived in IL, IA, WA, CA. FL.
FL has lowest taxes. My house is worth $350k om market, and my prop tax is $2200. Sales tax 6.5%. annual car stickers $30. Electric bill $55/month averaged over 12 months, but water & sewer is not cheaper than previous states.
