U.S.A. –-(AmmoLand.com)- A decade or more ago, a middle-aged couple in Washington State settled in on some acreage near the Hood Canal. They started raising chickens and sheep. All was going well, but coyotes started showing up, killing and eating their livestock. There was a wash/intermittent stream/ravine at the back of one of their pastures. It was a coyote highway through the area.
As the problem got worse, they obtained a McNab dog. He was very effective at chasing off coyotes. The population of coyotes kept growing. There was a nearby marina where the coyotes were able to obtain food. More housing was moving into nearby suburbs. The coyotes had access to lots of pets (cats and small dogs) for food. The number of coyotes became overwhelming for their dog to defend against.
The coyotes were taking an average of a chicken or two a week. You do not want to lose a laying hen when she starts to produce. The final straw was reached when the husband witnessed a pack of coyotes pull down and kill one of their oldest-producing ewes. Call him Grant. Grant’s wife told him that was enough. She said: Do what you have to do to protect our livestock. The coyotes had become so numerous they would see them every day. They would hear numerous coyotes yipping and howling at night. Grant did not have experience as a hunter. He was and is a shooter and a thinker.
There was a hog slaughterhouse not too far from their acreage.

PETA is fine with Coyotes taking down stock. Things change when it is little Fido on the other end of the leash the Coyote is tugging on.
While I admire the coyote’s adaptability and survival I have no problem with predator control.
In many parts of this country, coyotes (and deer) have reached a point where they have no natural enemies except man and must be controlled. While many or all animal activist do not see it, firearms are the most human way to contol them.
Democrat Socialists ARE coyotes, in both senses of the word, as conveyance for illegal immigrants, and as a wild predator that hits targets of opportunity.
Their population must be strictly limited by whatever means.
In my part of the country coyotes are shot by some of us on sight.
My son shot one near his chicken coop a week ago. we keep rifle loaded and ready just for that purpose.

About three years ago, coyotes were seen chasing deer in our residential neighborhood. There was a significant decrease in the stray cat population.
Lately though, the deer population seems to have decreased and the stray cat’s have resumed
I’m glad the coyotes have established themselves here in “suburban Maryland” where I’ve lived for 30 years and have been seeing them for almost 20 years.
They’ve managed to keep the cat population down, more than I ever could with havahart/SSS methods.
Wild turkeys are back, there are more deer, squirrels, chipmunks, songbirds and less cat crap in our gardens (look up house cat zoonoses sometime).
Now if we can just get the coyote population under control here (and on our southern border) we’ll all be better off.
It’s a bigger battle fighting with the envionazi “animal rights” groups here.
Coyotes are a real problem where we live. We cannot keep an outside cat. And a few days ago one was walking around near us like a wild dog would, totally unafraid. I had no gun at the time or I would have nailed it.
I’ve been thinking about building a huge live trap with a small animal carcass in it. The trap would have a very small exit door for cats, skunks and other small animals to escape.
I don’t like foot hold traps due to deer and body grip traps as they get pets. With live traps you have the option to release unintended animals.
