Just came across this today. Interesting, as I have never heard of this attempt.

The doctors later reiterated that if King had sneezed, he would have died. Curry, the would-be assassin, was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia, and she spent the rest of her life in mental institutions. The Georgia native, at the time of the incident, had an IQ of about 70 and was found not fit to stand trial, reported the Journal-Constitution.
Before stabbing King, the mentally disturbed woman had, for many years, had delusions that the NAACP was a Communist front and that members were persecuting her and preventing her from finding a stable job. As years passed, King became the centre of those delusions, according to The Times.
A psychiatric report, obtained in 2014, said Curry “believes she has been under constant surveillance and all her movements are known to the NAACP and Dr. King. She has feared for her life and for the past year and has been carrying a gun to protect herself against possible assault.”
At the age of 98, after spending the rest of her life in psychiatric facilities, she passed away on March 7, 2015, in a nursing home in Queens.

...had an IQ of about 70 and was found not fit to stand trial... Now an IQ of 70 is a leader in so many communities.

Also interesting that his would-be assassin spent the rest of her life (just shy of 57 years) in a mental institution. Today, she would be out in less than 57 minutes.

He WAS a communist. Now “re-imagined” as a national hero.

Only because the attempted killer wasn’t a honkie.

Now an IQ of 70 is a leader in so many communities. Yes, there is one, with an IQ of that or less, who lives in Montecito and has a Netflix series.

Was he a communist? I'm not saying he was a saint or anything. I'm just saying if we're gonna fuss at folks the onus is on us, especially as Christians, to make sure our accusations are correct. Did he cheat on his wife? Yes. Did he do the nasty with underage women? Yes. All while calling himself a minister? Yes. Judging him for those things is accurate.
But saying he supported communism? Nope. Here's a letter he wrote saying a Christian can't be a communist: https://teachingamericanhistory.org/document/can-a-christian-be-a-communist/. MLKJr was also on good relations with VP Nixon, who's main claim to fame at the time was taking down communist Alger Hiss -- hard to imagine communist supporters having good feelings for Nixon. Basically the only link we have with MLKJr and the Communist Party comes from Kennedy's FBI -- if that's worth anything.
We do have on record MLKSr being a loud supporter of "the party of Lincoln". That changed only after the Dims put MLKJr in jail in Birmingham and MLKSr begged President Kennedy to get his son released. Only after that did MLKSr say he supported Dims (perhaps as part of a shakedown agreement by JFK).

I wouldn’t doubt that for a second. J. Edger Hoover wanted MLK dead.
