Consumers can take a lot, but when you start raising prices on staples like eggs and milk, a definite din begins to rise from the streets.
I knew something was up during a pre-Christmas trip to Costco, where a frenzied mob of shoppers were exasperated after being told, "We're out of eggs. We won't have any more until a truck comes in!"

Why did the chicken cross the road in a chauffeured stretch limo?
To get to the other side to finalize a lucrative egg deal.
I try first to buy my eggs from a farmer who sells them at the farmers market and does a phenomenal job. But even weeks before Christmas the other farm that I get them from at the store that I research wasn’t selling them anymore.
Costco had by far the best price, which was $3 per dozen, buying two dozen pack.
Aldi was $4.59 a dozen. Supermarket chains even higher.
When Biden came in I was buying eggs at 1.29 or so regularly at Aldi.
I have so many eggs I give them away.
But you have to watch where you step and listen
to rooster crowing.
My chickens free range.
I think that part of the problem of egg prices is inelastic demand. People used to eating eggs for breakfast won’t switch to an alternative, so a 10-15% decrease in egg supplies has led to a 200% increase in egg price. The obvious answer is to eat chicken until egg prices come down.
Our Aldi here would have days where they marked them down to .49 cents.

Same here. We bring in enough to keep the immediate family supplied. I’m in charge of taking deviled eggs to all family dinners. Ours are free range as well, and it is amazing where those suckers can hide their nests! They seldom use the nesting boxes in the barn, but instead prefer behind the wood pile, under the barn cabinet, etc.
Before my mom died in September I made her a plate of deviled eggs. She ate one a day for about a week. It’s one of the last solid foods we could tempt her to eat before she stopped eating all together. She passed away peacefully with me and another sister there with her about two weeks after I brought the dish of deviled eggs. I’ll always be thankful I took the time to prepare those for her and she enjoyed them as much as she did.
Jumbo eggs at Sendiks in Wisconsin $9.00 a dozen
Aldi is great.
It’s relatively new here and I buy most things there now.
Crazy.
Those state laws on free reign chicken also ups the price. I don’t know it WI has that.
A dozen large eggs was around $5.50 a dozen yesterday at Walmart. I bought 1 1/2 dozen extra large for $8.20.
One dozen large were marked $6.99 at a Safeway in Tucson yesterday. I’m using a lot fewer eggs these days, but some things need them.
Get used to it.
When diesel hits $10-11-12/gal, owner-drivers will lose money, and NO TRUCKS will be running and shelves will empty out for months.
I was just about shocked yesterday. Egg prices had been $3.00 - $4.00 and more for large for a while, but there seemed to be a big jump recently to $5.50 or more.
“Besides the bird flu, the cost of eggs is also being pumped up thanks to rising electric and gas prices, as well as high feed and fertilizer prices, which have only recently started to come down.”
Gee. And WHO was responsible for THAT?
“Despite all of the gloom, Joe concluded with words of encouragement. “We farmers are great at producing food. We’ll figure it out. We’ll get through it. And consumers will have inexpensive food again. We just don’t know how far down the road that will be.”
Same here. About all I can do is buy them as seldom as possible. When (if) one of the stores has a decent sale price, I’ll buy several dozen.
I can't brag about them enough. They've been in my town since the 90s and there were times throughout my adult life, that I didn't know where my next dime was coming from, being between jobs or whatever (I never took government crap handouts). Being a single mom I could take $20 and go to Aldi and stock up for a week (keep in mind this was early 90s). But even when I got on my feet and to this day I shop at Aldi. They're fantastic!
Most brand names that are at the larger grocers Aldi has an equal (or sometimes better) available. I just love them!
Aldi should hire me as a pr person ha ha!

Dad told me not to take all the eggs when I found a nest. Leave one. Then they won’t move it.
