BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — At least 26 people have died during the 2022 blizzard in Western New York.
Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown reported numbers totaling 27 earlier Monday morning, however County Executive Mark Poloncarz later said the County Medical Examiner’s official total of storm-related deaths remains at 26 for now, as not all deaths have necessarily been related to the storm. Both Poloncarz and Mayor Brown acknowledged that number will likely go up.
Nineteen of the deaths have been confirmed in the City of Buffalo, with three in Amherst and three in Cheektowaga, one of which was in the village of Depew. Additionally, a 27-year-old man was found dead in the Town of Lockport on Sunday due to suspected carbon monoxide poisoning, according to the Niagara County Sheriff’s Office. The ages of the deceased in Erie County range in ages from 22-93.
Over the weekend, 18 storm-related deaths were confirmed across Erie and Niagara Counties. As of Monday morning, that total made the jump to 26.
“There may be more,” Poloncarz said Sunday during a storm response briefing. “I don’t want to say this is going to be it, because that would be fallacy for me to say that. Because we know there are people stuck in cars for more than two days. And there are people in homes that are below freezing now temperatures.”

I see a lot of farticles about “How to watch” an NBA of NFL game, or how to watch “Yellowstone” or “The View” but I’ve yet to see on farticle about “How to Survive a Cyclone Bomb.” How do they expect people to figure that kind of stuff out for themselves?
““There may be more,” Poloncarz said...”
Awaiting the springtime thaw...
I’ve heard of the looting. I don’t understand how looters can go out in snowdrifts several feet high and go do that. But apparently they are taking advantage of the bad weather to commit their crimes.
Yes. Yesterday, nothing to do with storms, my cousins’ mom died in the morning and an under 40 mom and wife died last night. As of last summer they lived around the corner from each other.

That idiot can count that high?
Most CO deaths are from improper use of portable generators or temporary heating appliances. Like running the generator in the garage with the door open.
Everytime there is a major power outage here in NH some people kill themselves with the exhaust from a generator.
Other Darwin potential award winners will end up burning their house down. I asked a former firefighter buddy what was the stupidest thing he had seen after a recent ice storm.
He told me how they showed up to a single story house. There was smoke coming out the basement windows.
The guy had lost power and decided to build a campfire on the concrete floor in the basement to warm up the house.
They scorched the floor joists almost catching the underside of the first floor on fire.
Were any of them the looters? If not, it’s a tragedy.
Snow that falls that deep and fast could easily block exhaust vents for gas furnaces and water heaters, too.
I know someone in this recent storm who had to go outside and know the ice off her furnace vent for the furnace to work.
I could see blocked vents being a problem.
Agreed.
possibly however most MODERN high efficiency furnaces go “off on limit” when the venting is blocked, thus shutting down the entire system. Since the late nineties.
