I’m just happy that (1) Argentina won and (2) it wasn’t a 0 - 0 tie....

RE: So all this hype is over now? Finally!

People don’t realize how this particularWorld Cup influenced events elsewhere.

Just one example — Many cities in China were locked down due to the spread of Omicron in the country ( actually a very weak variant of Covid ). So, what do people do at home? Heck, they watch the World Cup ! And what do they notice?

Hundreds of thousands of spectators sitting next to each other in a stadium WITHOUT MASKS !

The locked down Chinese begin to ask themselves why the heck are people everywhere else FREE to risk the Omicron virus and NOT getting sick or dying while they are being forced to stay home, in effect, being under house arrest for months.

This, and a fire in Xinjiang that killed at least 10 locked down residents actually became one of the catalysts for the unprecedented mass protests in China that eventually forced the Chinese Communist Government to loosen restrictions and open up somewhat.

It’s almost to the point that the French team could be called The All Blacks.

“The TV ratings for today’s game will dwarf the Super Bowl ratings multiple times over.”

So very true……

I do not care for either team, but wanted to have France win so I did not have to hear all the garbage about Messi being the GOAT. He needed the World Cup win or he would have no claim to that title. Where has he played besides Spain in La Liga and France in League 1. Neither of which claim to be two of your tougher leagues. In both leagues you have one or two teams that dominate, the rest fight over the scraps. He has never played in Italy, Germany or England. Tougher leagues where he may not have fared so well. I don’t care for Ronaldo, but he played and won Championships in England, Spain and Italy. Yes Messi played in the Championship, but not while simultaneously playing in a tough league like the EPL. Messi scored a lot of goals in Spain, some in France and will probably move to the MLS and score more. But, I doubt he would have been as prolific had he risked a move to England.

And so we bid adios (adieu?) to Qatar, which out and out bought itself a World Cup tournament, and where third country nationals gave their lives to build the facilities.

You're right, now we can get back to our good old USofA woke sports and be lectured by over paid gangsters with degrees in basket weaving. Cannot wait to see the first tranny kicker in the NFL or the new dresses umpires will wear in MLB.

I personally don’t care about best ever arguments. I think Christiano Ronaldo is better than Messi, but it’s meaningless.

Messi's parents brought him to Barcelona and their football academy when he was just a teenager. He really didn't have much choice there, and maybe it was the perfect match of player and team and philosophy. You certainly can't fault him for his performances in cup championships over the years. And if La Liga is weak that's not his fault. Is he the GOAT? The names Pele and Maradona come to mind (Maradona almost single-handedly made Napoli a power when he played there). And Renaldo has had a fantastic career too.

I agree, but the first thing an announcer said was Messi is the greatest of all time. Maybe he is, today, but he is only the greatest until the next greatest of all time.

Aye-Yi! Yi!..
Oh well, good for those who enjoy it.
Makes for a fun afternoon, I’m sure.

Keep the snacks and the drinks in sufficent supply.
Many folks in our country will be going
equally Hog-Wild in February about the next Super Bowl.

Well, that would be a complete change in the rules of how the game has been played forever. After 90 minutes of play, plus stoppage, then 30 more minutes, plus stoppage, you seem to think that going to penalty kicks is a random way to decide the winner. Just wow.

Today, Messi, Mbappe, and several others players ran their asses off for 2 hours and 10 minutes, and the score was still tied. The PK’s were impressive. In my mind, that’s a lot of athleticism exhibited by both of these world class teams.

Phenomenal game, perhaps the best I’ve ever seen. The first half was a clinic on how to control the ball. I’ve never seen such perfect passing.

Congratulations to Argentina, and also France. Also the center official was perhaps one of the best I’ve seen too. Great refereeing today.

Soccer can be a nice game to watch when they just have to tie, but it is a great game to watch when they have to win. This was one of the best sporting events I ever watched.

While we’re at changing the rules, let’s take two players off each for American football in the overtime periods. That might change that game, too.

Not blaming him, it was a smart move financially and no doubt extended his career. I just question whether he would have been as prolific had he moved to the EPL or Bundesliga at his peak. All speculation either way.

Correct. It's like having each team having their kicker having to kick their field goals in overtime in an American football game. Each kicker gets five field goals each. Seems random to me. That's all. My opinion. I am not a life long soccer fan.

American Football overtime: winner should be the first team to score at least four points.
