The Founders of this great nation said that if the Constitution was going to work, we needed a moral and informed population.

Methinks we might make it for 50-75 years more, tops.

College was intended as an advanced institute of learning to cater to those with well above average intellect so they could be developed into problem solvers and achievers in their given field of study. Requiring one semester of calculus for all majors could be said to meet this intent; it would ensure a mind capable of abstraction and above average intelligence.
For those who can’t pass algebra, this is something that most of the population can do and it requires only average intelligence; this should be a sign they have no business in college.

It was a requirement for graduation when I was in school in the early 1990’s. Tough class, I took it in summer so it was very accelerated, time-wise.

Algebra is the manipulation of symbols and patterns of them to a set of rules to convey information. You create expression (or do reductions!) of a new pattern of symbols to say what you need to say.

Fundamentally if you are doing arithmetic, you are doing an algebra. You are manipulating symbols, forming and reducing patterns and interpreting those patterns. The number symbols used are irrelevant, you could use Roman, Greek, Chinese etc. number systems and it would still be the same.

If you play cards, it’s an algebra!

Language is an algebra! Letters are its basic symbols, words higher order structures (patterns) as are sentence (even higher!) & paragrpahs (Higher still!) Spelling\grammar are it rules.

If you have to program something - your cell phone, your DVD player, any of your surveying instruments. You’re using symbols to convey information or perform a task.

It’s all an algebra!

For certain jobs, my employer has waived this requirement but there are positions that require a degree or professional designation.

Like, you know dude, math is HARD!!!

No wonder they cannot drive manual transmission cars or tell time on an analog clock.

I can hardly wait for young graduating engineers who cannot do math.

They will design future bridges, buildings, ships, vehicles, submarines and airliners only a fool would accept as safe.

The “new math” is NO MATH.

America is a country heading for widespread Darwin awards and its own destruction.

You don’t learn algebra in order to do math. You learn algebra in order to learn how to think when solving a problem. That is why the leftists want to dumb down the college program and take out the algebra, because people who think do not become leftists, and if they do they don’t stay there for long.

Leftists love Plato: they want to be the Guardians, with the rest of us stuck in the cave, watching the entertaining shadows and working our a$$es off so they can be rich. There are only two antidotes: Aristotle (or Confucius) and Jesus. It’s no accident that Aquinas tried putting the Aristotle and Jesus together in his Summa Teologica, or in Momoyama era Japan Takayama Ukon tried putting Confucius and Jesus together in his practice of chanoyu.

I don’t suppose it’s occurred to them to require students to rise to the standard...

The reason you have never used algebra says more about how it was taught than the utility of algebra. One huge problem is that most high school and elementary mathematics teachers are incompetent. Paying higher salaries to competent math teachers than English and Social Studies teachers would hurt their pride. Not that humanities teachers are not also incompetent for the most part.

Agree!
For many in the K12 system geometry\algebra are the only times they are required to think logically, precisely and emotion free. “Emotion free” is why so many in the teenage-to-20 age group have so much trouble and hate it.

MIT is not Ivy League. I interviewed at Draper Labs (an MIT spin off) and the HR representative told me (at the time) that they don’t even consider applications from (Ivy League) Dartmouth graduates.

My college math professors would rip anyone that failed tests. Their favorite slam was asking if their major was hotel/motel/ restuarant management!
