I’ve caught lots of birds in my hands like that, many of them thanks to that cat. I was leery of doing that with that huge Pileated Woodpecker, though. Big beak! I opened the door wide and eventually got him to fly out.

I once lived in an antebellum house with chimney swifts. I loved the swifts, but many mornings found one clinging to the living room wall. They were very easy to catch in my hands. Sweet little birdies.

I had a black tuxedo cat when I was a kid.

Long silky fur, gorgeous markings. Big gold eyes.

But she was a pi$$er.

Adored me, hated every other human.

Chased the neighborhood dogs, deer...

What a mew!

I expect the cat wasn’t hungry for a few days.

It’s not hard to get them to sit on your hand and feed, especially if they’ve learned to use a feeder already. You can buy little feeder pods, and then maybe move on to a puddle of sugar water in your hand:

A better and infact correct question is how small was the alligator?

We had a male Maine Coon who brought a live grouse into the house to play with.

My various past cats have also brought in live deermice, chipmunks and I think I recall a gosling.

Our favorite dog, a Japanese Akita, once dragged an entire male deer carcass through the woods, down a series of banks and as close to the house as we would allow, so he could feast in comfort. It took him three days and we watched the entire time from afar. Very focused dog. Hubby disposed of the carcass very early one morning.

Wow! A grouse! Big game hunter kitty. Did you call him Hemingway, by chance?

The cat who brought in the live woodpecker also brought in deermice, chipmunks, shrews, etc. Once, a flying squirrel. She didn’t seem to actively hunt and was rather lazy, gentle and very sweet. She liked to lie in the sun in the mulch in the flower bed, and being a tortoise shell, was perfectly camouflaged. Birds would hop around her sometimes while she snoozed. We joked that that she just happened to find all these critters near her mouth.

Your Akita sounds like quite the hunter! I did not know Akitas were hunters. Learn something new every day here.

Years ago, we adopted an Akita mix who showed up at our house. He appeared to have been beaten and abused and it was obvious his jaw had been broken and healed crookedly. The vet took one look at him, recognized him as a dog he knew had been beaten and said “he’s yours” when asked if he already belonged to someone and was lost. Poor dog. He was a wonderful dog, but always kind of wimpy and never hunted. I still miss that dear old dog. We gave him a loving home and a good life and he and my Newfie mix were best buds and it was fun to watch them play together. That’s what counts. Still, it’s hard when they get old and die and break our hearts.

Oh, those two dogs were so funny and thought they were the Cat Police. Every time there was a little kitty squabble, they’d dash up and stick their big black noses close to the cats and the kitties would look sheepish and calm down.

I’m pretty sure he found it and was just scavenging.

The beagle we also had at that time tried mightily to teach
the Akita how to hunt rabbits, but Akitas do not corner well.
