Domino's Pizza orders 855 custom-made Chevy Bolt EVs for US pizza deliveries

Story by Jamie L. LaReau, Detroit Free Press

Domino's Pizza will have 855 custom-branded Chevrolet Bolt electric vehicles on U.S. roadways delivering pizza by the end of 2023.

In Michigan, there will be 93 Bolts, 49 in metro Detroit.

The Ann Arbor-based pizza company's website said it currently has 112 Bolts on U.S. roadways; 12 of them are in Michigan. By the end of next year, when all 855 will be in service, Domino's said it will be the largest electric pizza delivery fleet in the nation and said doing so will help attract and retain delivery drivers and help the corporation achieve carbon neutrality by its 2050 target.

"One of the many reasons to have an EV fleet is indeed to attract drivers, as it is an appealing option for drivers who don’t have a car of their own," said Domino's spokeswoman Dani Bulger. "Right now, most delivery drivers across the U.S. use their own vehicles."

Domino’s already does some deliveries using electric bikes and/or scooters in 24 international markets, including the U.S. The franchisees will decide the specific stores they want to keep the EVs at and invest in a charger, Bulger said. She declined to say how much a charger will cost because it will vary, depending on the scale, installation details and charging features that the franchisee wants. But because of the Bolt's range, Domino's said in a statement, "there is potential to have days of deliveries, zero tailpipe emissions, advanced safety features and lower average maintenance costs than nonelectric vehicles — all without the financial impact of high gas prices."

A guy I worked with at Domino's bought a Chevy Volt, or Bolt, or Jolt, whatever. Had it set up where he could plug it in at home. He loved it. Weird how quiet it was.

Might not be a terrible idea for delivering around town, but the logistics of keeping them charged will be an issue.

I think most make a synthetic noise so people can hear them now.
I think enough people got hit in crosswalks and parking lots to raise the “silence” issue.

They don't "idle" when waiting in traffic. Dominos doesn't keep breakfast hours so there is a nice recharge window.

A lot of drivers may live in apartments or rentals where recharging doesn't work, but 800 vehicles is a small piece of the action (I provided my '66 Dart back in the day).

My only fear is having to avoid running the heater during a Michigan winter if the charge starts getting low.

And at the last store I worked, keeping the homeless bums from sleeping in them will also be an issue.

“Had it set up where he could plug it in at home.”

Did he mention how that impacted his electric bill? Not criticizing, but sincerely wondering.

I think he said the electric bill was lower than the gas bill for his previous car.

If your EV runs out of juice at least you can eat the customer's pizza...

Hi.

“but the logistics of keeping them charged will be an issue.”

Especially with the warming ovens.

“Might not be a terrible idea for delivering around town, but the logistics of keeping them charged will be an issue.”

Actually, for them, it might not be too bad, as their peak hours for deliveries are quite limited. Totally different than, say, a taxi company.

One buys electricity per “kilowatt-hour.”

The vast majority of progressive idiots, devoid of any actual science knowledge, think charging a car takes about as much as charging a laptop.

Medium-use electric vehicles use as much total electricity PER DAY as a three-bedroom typical house uses in A MONTH. (Plus or minus a bit.)

AND the electricity is GENERATED many MILES away, and there’s considerable LOSS in the transmission wires; AND the power plants BURN something (oil/gas) or use EVIL NOOKLEAR POWER — BOTH too evil to even contemplate.

Bottom Line:
EVs are NOT cheap, and DO make as much “pollution” as anything else — they just do it miles away.

This is not improvement OR “green.”

Definitely depends on the delivery area. At one store, I was driving 100 miles a night, because the area was so big. They really needed to divide that area in half and open a second store.

But for college or military towns, where the delivery area is more condensed, it would work.

Being from NY, the first time I had Dominoes I think I was about 16. I was genuinely shocked at how bad it was and perplexed that with such plentiful good options people would choose that.

I honestly think (many) Americans have the worst taste buds on the planet.

Let me guess the Obama/Biden mafia twisted their arms to buy them from Chevy.
Just as I expected Domino’s is head quarter in Ann Arbor, Michigan, another liberal Blue State in a big time Democrat controlled City.
