NOTE: President Zelensky previously said that by blowing the dam, Moscow would be destroying the water supply to Crimea and thus show that Russia had accepted that it could not hold onto the peninsula.

It appears from the video that they bombed the electrical generators on top of the dam along with a substation off to the side.

No attempt was made from the video at destroying the dam itself.

I hate Putin and Russia as much as anyone, but there is no reason to lie about what they are doing, when there is so much that they have actually done that is horrible.

Totally awesome! Of course, that is if we can believe anything the Daily Mail reports about the war given is abysmal track record.

Russia has been claiming Ukraine would blow the dam, but it’s hard to argue that this was a Ukrainian action, in that the Ukrainians have been able to blow the dam for weeks, so why would they do it once blowing the dam could not longer help rid Kherson of Russians, or trap 20,000 Russians in a bloodbath? Plus, once Ukraine controls Kherson, they no longer need to blow it to cut off Crimea’s water.

The purpose was to prevent Ukraine from chasing Russian troops across the Dneiper.

So let me get this straight - after weeks of warning the Ukrainians were going to blow the Nova Kakhovka dam, the Russians filmed themselves, er, blowing up the Nova Kakhovka dam.

And that’s after dozens of similar incidents where the Russians have insisted the Ukrainians were going to destroy their own stuff, Russia destroyed it.

And all of this started when their butt-monkey Pushilin insisted Ukraine was about to invade and trash the Donbass, less than a fortnight before Russia launched an invasion and started trashing...

Never mind. Point is, anyone who still believes Russian warnings aren’t false flags should advertise themselves as the most gullible planks on the planet. Because due to over-ordering, I’ve got a thousand London Bridges for sale, going cheap.

You hit the nail on the head. Russian strategic thinking is once again flawed.

That dam is the source of the Northern Crimean Canal. Shortly after the February 2022 invasion, the dam that Ukraine had build to block the flow of water to Crimea was destroyed. The dam that Russia just destroyed has a reservoir that is used to pump water up to the Northern Crimean Canal.

I expect that Ukraine will soon stop all water flowing into the Canal at this location, except for some amounts that will go to agricultural lands and cities that Ukraine still controls.

To the extent that the Russian bridge to Crimea has shown it can be destroyed by Ukrainian rockets and artillery, and that the Sevastopol Naval facility can be attacked at will by Ukraine, Crimea will be hard to defend and civilians will need to be evacuated. This will be a bitter pill for Russia as Sevastopol is a key historic Russian military naval facility important for its warm water and ice-free port.
