Nice list. I have built four computers over the years and thinking about another fairly soon.

From your list, probably the only change I’d make is saving on the RAM 32 > 16GB. 16 is adequate. Using the savings and applying it to a tried and true reliable SSD brand like a Samsung or WD. Also add a couple case fans and a cheap CD/DVD player, they can still come in handy and can be had for under $25 new, or $15 used.

Not in my experience with Windows unless one does not open many tabs and programs. I do not waste time on gaming, and have pared down unnecessary programs (see Autoruns) yet with multiple programs and many tabs running even 32GB was not enough.

So to be safe I put 32GB, and DDR4 RAM has dropped a lot in the past year. But yes, one could choose 16GB if adequate. As for the other items, I was thinking of an upgrade, in which one could use a DVD player.

And as for true reliable SSD brand like a Samsung or WD, Samsung is made by Seagate which owns Maxtor, and which had acquired the hard drive business of Quantum, while Western Digital bought Hitachi and owns SanDisk and HGST. Meaning you may not know who made the SSD, while a 512GB NVMe M.2 PCIe Gen3x4 should be the main drive on the MSI 450 mobo. I have a Silicon Power one, and which company was ranked No.11 in the top 1,000 fastest growing manufacturers in Taiwan in 2010 and ranked No.1 in the Semiconductor industry. For an old PC, I just bought a $14 HYUNDAI SSD which is made by Hynix, the world's second-largest memory chipmaker (after Samsung Electronics).

But who even uses desktops much, apart from gamers?

Ummm, myself, right now. I like kicking my feet up, keyboard in my lap and reading from a 25” monitor. Phone or tablet for the bed.

Some people only need a scooter, others a compact car, some a SUV, then there are those who use a utility truck. 8 browsers (most portable Firefox) open now, all using multiple tab rows (hack). each for its own general purpose, (incldg. 2 for forums 3 for shopping - Amazon, Ebay and bike parts, Walmart - one loading html pages of past posts -saves time with arthritic fingers, plus redundant issues, and the last one for a few relatively quality, mainly Christian vids for sometimes when I am too tired to be productive), plus multiple LibreOffice documents in various states of work. One a customized Windows 11, thank God for the tools to be used for good.
