Lucianne Goldberg, the conservative literary agent who played a pivotal role in exposing the affair between Monica Lewinsky and Bill Clinton, died Wednesday at 87.
Her son, journalist Jonah Goldberg, confirmed the news Thursday and said his mother died 'peacefully at home, surrounded by people – and pets! – who loved her.'
It was Goldberg who advised Pentagon aide Linda Tripp to record her conversations with then-White House intern Lewinsky when the then-24-year-old spoke about her affair with President Clinton.
Those 20 hours of recordings became key evidence in the Kenneth Star investigation of Clinton over his affair with Lewinsky and whether he committed perjury by lying about the affair in the Paula Jones sexual harassment case.
Clinton was impeached by the House of Representatives on Dec. 19, 1998 for denying under oath that he had had sex with Lewinsky, but he was acquitted by the Senate.
A longtime Clinton foe, Goldberg had met Tripp while working on a proposal for a book on the death of Vince Foster, a Clinton aide whose suicide sparked conservative conspiracy theories. It was Goldberg who told her friend the recordings would be legal -- they weren’t -- and then encouraged her to break Lewinsky’s trust and give them to Starr. Goldberg later said she was glad Clinton had been caught “at something.”
As a New York literary agent Goldberg was known for promoting books others did not want to touch. The New York Times described her as “an agent with a taste for right-wing, tell-all attack books” in an article published amid the fallout from the Lewinsky tapes.

I found my way to FR via Lucianne’s forum. If I recall correctly, I found her via Drudge lol.
In my case, before Free Republic, there was Lucianne.
I used to spend hours on that site, back in the late 1990’s.
I was still Computer-Phobic, so I used a device called
Web-TV, a little black box you put on top of your TV, allowing you to receive websites.
This, back when most people still described websites as
“Double-You, Double-You, Double-You (your name here) Dot-Com.
Thank you Lucianne
i thought it was funny that the announcement on Lucianne.com repeatedly said that jonah would not have anything to do with the website
Prayers she rests in peace. Jonah…not a fan.
BTTT
Not a fan of his, either.
my story is like others...heard of Drudge on Rush, and on Drudge, it was on to Free Republic.....back then we had dial up and then we got cable internet and I would spend hrs upstairs on the old desk top.....
life was good....
“I seem to recall that Lucianne, who used to post on FR, came after FR was started....I could be wrong....”
No, you are right. Lucianne broke away from FR to start her own competing website.
I LOVED my WEB-TV!!
I liked her....she had GUTS!
A real character and a long life. I wouldn’t mind if that’s what people said about me when I’m gone ... although, “Who?” would be okay, too.
“I found my way to FR via Lucianne’s forum.”
Ditto for me. Last post on Lucianne.com probably was around 2000.
That was quite a run at life, Lucianne.
I remember she posted here and then started a rip-off clone site of Free Republic.
I remember Lucianne very well from FR. She was a great poster. She started her site afterward, which is a great site but no FR.
There have been a number of really great posters throughout the years. OMG, a couple I KNOW but cannot remember their handles. It’s been that long.
Those were the days of true citizen journalism, and not the copy snd paste form so very common now
(of which I am occasionally guilty)
You are remembered, Lucianne.
I remember the Drudge light flashing the blue dress story.
FR had a live thread every Sunday night for Drudge radio show. Always a fun thread.
The Drudge Report was popular with conservatives.
MSM called internet news and sites like this a passing fad.
RIP Trixie.
I started that way a!so, but had trouble navigating the FR site. Ended up on NewsMax Forum for a coup!e of years until I gave FR another shot during the Rather exposure.
