FORT MYERS, FLORIDA — The aftermath of Hurricane Ian has highlighted the dangers of electric cars. Florida Chief Financial Officer and State Fire Marshal Jimmy Patronis has issued a warning regarding the severe fire hazard posed by these vehicles in combination with salt water.

“I joined North Collier Fire Rescue to assess response activities related to Hurricane Ian and saw with my own eyes an EV continuously ignite, and continually reignite, as fireteams doused the vehicle with tens-of-thousands of gallons of water,” Patronis told Florida Politics on Sunday.

“as fireteams doused the vehicle with tens-of-thousands of gallons of water...”

Hmm, maybe dousing a battery fire with water is not the best strategy?

May be water was all they had. I agree...there needs to be something that stops these fires quickly. Foam, halon, sand, stick of dynamite...I don’t know.

“Chief, you said I could do the dynamite at the next EV fire! It’s my turn. I want to blow it up!”

There’s no practical alternative except cordon it off and let it burn.

“May be water was all they had.”

Yeah, that’s probably the case, after all, it’s a general disaster so even if there were other options normally available, they might not have been available in that particular situation.

What about sealing the EV in concrete like they do for a melting down nuclear reactor core?

The story is not believable. Everybody knows you don’t throw water on an electrical fire. Use CO2 or chemical extiguishers. There will be a big demand for fire extinguishers if EV grows.

No fire dept is as stupid as in the story.

10’w x 20’L x 8’h concrete blocks in driveways, streets, and alleys are probably not approved by your homeowners assoc.

It’s not an electrical fire.

It’s a light metal fire.

Light metal fires burn hot.

Even if deprived of oxygen from the surrounding environment of atmospheric air, a burning slag of light metal can extract oxygen from vaporized liquid water.

Naaaa-sty!

So....there are more and more articles and stories about EV vehicles burning, whether water is involved or not. They also have pie-in-the-sky articles about all-electric aircraft. So...will every air passenger be required to wear a parachute in case the plane batteries ignite?

Since many of the electric car fires happen without occupants, will all the electric planes be required to park away from all the other planes? Come to think of it, will there be flying Tesla stations that hook up and fast charge while in flight? I have read over and over that fast charging damages and shortens the overall life of the battery.

"Hmm, maybe dousing a battery fire with water is not the best strategy?"

Why, you afraid it'll make it catch more fire?

"...will all the electric planes be required to park away from all the other planes?"

Burn a couple airliners up, or an airport...things could get expensive very fast.
