Can losing weight combat the structural defects of knee osteoarthritis? (Weight loss reduces incidence & progression)
Medical Xpress / Wiley / Arthritis & Rheumatology ^ | Sept. 7, 2022 | Zubeyir Salis et al

Posted on 09/07/2022 11:43:34 AM PDT by ConservativeMind

A decrease in body mass index (BMI) was associated with both a lower incidence of the structural defects of knee osteoarthritis and a lower likelihood that such defects would progress, or get worse.

Researchers examined radiographic analyses of knees at baseline and at 4 to 5 years' follow up from adults with and without the structural defects of knee osteoarthritis at the start of the study. The team assessed 9,683 knees (from 5,774 individuals) in an 'incidence cohort' and 6,075 knees (from 3,988 individuals) in a 'progression cohort.'

A 1-unit decrease in BMI corresponded to a 4.76% reduction in odds of the incidence and progression of knee osteoarthritis; however, a 5-unit decrease in BMI, which is an amount that can lead to a reduction in BMI category (for example., from overweight to normal), reduced the odds of incidence and progression by 21.65%.

"These findings could be empowering for people with or at risk of knee osteoarthritis," said lead author Zubeyir Salis, BEng, and a Ph.D. student. "The current prevailing view is that knee osteoarthritis is part of aging and that we have no control over it. However, my analyses suggest that some people could potentially prevent, slow or delay knee osteoarthritis by losing weight."

This is old news. Even a 10 pound at loss relieves so much pressure. I have very bad knees and have started keto to loose weight so dr can do surgery. This has been a bad keto week for me due to a big family wedding and traveling.

Let’s see...a 140lbs verses 350 lbs. Hmmm, that’s hard to guess. Sure hope ‘science’ can answer this.

Science studies common sense using millions of dollars and finds out common sense is sensible. Who would have thunk it?

It only makes sense that excess weight would make joint problems worse.

Chapter 1, verse 23 of the Book of DUH.

Does everyone realize that there’s public funds (YOUR money) behind almost all of these crap ‘studies’?

a 5-unit decrease in BMI ... reduced the odds of incidence and progression by 21.65%.

If you are already at a reasonable weight, a 5-unit decrease in BMI is extreme. Probably these results only apply to grossly overweight persons.

A week is just a week. One can always get back on the wagon - coming from someone who has been MOSTLY keto for 5 years! There are just stretches of time where it doesn’t match life...then one starts again.

My wife is an ortho PA. Overweight people get offended when it's suggested their knee, foot and lower back problems are exacerbated by the extra weight.

Imagine a medical provider having the temerity to suggest some common sense advice. Especially when the fatso wants a miracle cure surgery.
