Dean Karnazes said the coyote pounced and knocked him off his feet just as he reached Mile 37 in the Marin Headlands.

Karnazes, 59, recorded an Instagram video at 3 a.m. Saturday moments after the attack.

“I’m at a 150 mile trail run and I got attacked by a coyote. That was a first. It knocked me over,” Karnazes says in the video with blood still on his face. “Thankfully I’m running with poles and I whacked it and it ran away...”

Karnazes was running alone with a headlamp to see through the darkness. Ultra marathon athletes run day and night for races to finish with the fastest possible time.

Karnazes is a well-respected endurance runner within the ultra marathon sports community. He ran 50 marathons in all 50 US states within 50 consecutive days, as well as won the Badwater ultra marathon and 4 Deserts Challenge.

“Thankfully I was running with poles.” Warsaw expressed its approval while Slovenia remained silent.

Prolly smelled like a corpse. Coyotes love corpses.

About 10 years ago, Mrs. abb decided that we needed expand our horizons in the Smoky Mountains, and hike to some waterfalls. Ok, we will need to get into a little better shape, I replied.

From then on, we have done about 2 3/4 miles every morning around the neighborhood, and then about 45 minutes in the PM on a stationary bike. I tell her she saved my life. Lost 50 pounds, and feel much better.

From there, we bought some aluminum hiking/trekking poles for us at Wally World. I use them every day, and have noticed a significant improvement in my arms and shoulders. It takes some weight off my knees, too.

On the mountain trails, the poles have been lifesavers, with a significant aid to balance around rocks and tree roots. They help more on downhill than uphill.

That said, as a former trail runner (though not an ultra-marathoner), I would agree with you.

My best marathon was 2:48:45, which qualified me for Boston. Did Boston in 2:56:57. A kid of 39 at the time!

I still work out every day road and mountain biking. But I miss running.

I tried to take up trail running again earlier in the year, but I couldn't get my legs to stop aching.
