Planned Parenthood refused a disabled artist an abortion because she uses a wheelchair, forcing the woman to spend four times more on a termination elsewhere.
Roxie Schiebergen, 30, got pregnant a month into a relationship with a man in the spring of 2021, and wanted to abort it.
Schiebergen told The New York Times: 'I was in a brand-new relationship,' she said. 'Having a family was something I wanted to do with someone I loved, and I didn't know him.'
The artist, who has been disabled since a car crash as a toddler, contacted her local Planned Parenthood clinic in NoHo, New York City, and booked an abortion which was set to cost her $500.
'I was crying from the start,' she told the New York Times. 'I told (the woman booking the appointment) I had a spinal cord injury and rods in my back from scoliosis,' but added that she did not mention anything about being in a wheelchair.
'When people hear the word 'wheelchair,' she said, 'they make decisions for me about what I can and cannot do without having any understanding of what I do for myself every single day.'
But just hours after that call to make the appointment, a Planned Parenthood worker called Schiebergen back to say: 'We don't do procedures for people in a wheelchair.'
Schiebergen was distraught and ended up having a termination at another facility in Midtown, which cost $2,000.
She the ordeal left her feeling 'defeated and powerless.'
'I felt like this can't be real,' she said. 'I started bargaining. I said something along the lines of, 'I can get on a table by myself. I'm very independent.' This was through tears.'

The question is why didn’t she use any birth control? If she has been ion relationships before surely she knows she can get different forms of birth control.
This is my main problem with Abortion, using it as brith control especially in this day and age.
