Videos of the shooting circulating online show the gunman approaching Abe from behind before firing two shots, both producing extremely loud cannon-like booms and plumes of white smoke.
Police later said they found multiple homemade guns and explosives when they searched Yamagami’s house, adding that he had allegedly admitted to shooting Abe with a DIY firearm.
From images of the gun, captured by bystanders including a reporter for Japan’s public broadcaster NHK, experts immediately suspected it was homemade. “The box-like device is wrapped in black tape and smoke can be seen coming from the muzzle. It’s certainly no standard shotgun,” a former detective for the Metropolitan Police Department firearms control division told The Daily Beast after reviewing photos.
While stressing it’s too early to be definitive about the precise design of the weapon used to murder Abe, another authority said the gun appeared to have some highly unusual features.
“I think the first interesting observation is that it’s clearly electrically fired,” said N. R. Jenzen-Jones, an arms and munitions intelligence specialist and Director of the U.K.-based Armament Research Services (ARES). “There’s electrical wire passing through each of those end caps that you can see in one of the images. That indicates to me that it’s an electrically-fired firearm.”
“My hunch is that it’s probably a muzzle-loading design,” Jenzen-Jones added. “It’s probably a smooth-bore weapon - by which I mean unrifled, like a shotgun - but again, that’s not a certainty.”

It looks to be a simple DIY cannon.
I’m no gun enthusiast but it seems like this sort of thing
would be easy to build for someone who is the least bit clever.
The answer to this sort of thing is to raise the moral standards of society. I can’t see how any law could keep
bad people from doing things like this.

all that smoke was not modern day propellant, for sure.im positive it was black powder.
In the second video, you see a member of the security detail (belatedly) deploy a briefcase like a ballistic shield. There must have been a small ballistic panel inside.
I’d hate to get hit with a potato cannon.
And those don’t require any gunpowder at all to work.
Once more proving that “Gun Control” is a myth.
Piss off enough people, or just one very determined enemy, and a weapon will be found or made.
Would the anti-RKBA types be happier if this was done with a IED that killed dozens?
Maybe a Petrol or Propane bomb would please them?
Even a simple can of hair-spray can be used to kill.
Perhaps an old sword as used in 1960, poisoned Shuriken, Archery, Spear, Cross-bow, or some other traditional Japanese weapons would make it all OK?
Murder is murder no matter how it is accomplished.
Anyone can build a working gun with a few dollars in hardware using 1950s zip gun technology. You can even find videos on YouTube telling you how to do it.

You notice their cops can subdue a subject without firing 15 or 30 rounds at him as is done here.
I notice in the video, the shooter missed with the first shot, but hit with the second. And he was not real close, either. I was suspecting a near contact shot when I first heard of the shooting.
A piece of pipe with a drilled end cap, a battery, a switch, a bit of nichrome igniter, some homemade black powder, some wadding, some 00 size ball bearings.
Voila, a shotgun.

Looks like you could conceal something like that in a fake telephoto lens.
I worked in a steel fabrication shop and there were lots of seamless steel pipe that one could make a muzzle loader out of real easily. Put a threaded cap on it, drill a hole for the touch hole, and you were in business.
But then, you could probably also make a cartridge firearm out of a piece of triple wall seamless. A “slam fire” shotgun.
None of it I worked with was of weak cast iron.
Firearms are actually EASY to make.
The Tyrone Power movie AN AMERICAN GUERILLA IN THE PHILIPPINES showed how it was done using two pieces of pipe, and a pipe cap.
About 30 years ago there was a company advertising in SHOTGUN NEWS, that made and legally sold such firearms.
