Boy Scout troops were heading home to Wisconsin after intense week-long New Mexico backpacking trip
Two Boy Scout troops who were on a Chicago-bound Amtrak train that derailed after hitting a dump truck in Missouri, assisted fellow passengers in getting them to safety and provided first aid, Fox News has learned.
In the immediate aftermath of the derailing, the two groups of Scouts broke windows and helped pull people out of train cars. They also used their advanced first-aid training to help injured passengers before first responders arrived at the crash site.
One of the Scouts, a 15-year-old boy, located the driver of the dump truck and assisted him before the driver died from his injuries.

Wonder why the dump truck driver thought that he could play “Beat the Train”?
Nice to see get the Boys Scouts get some positive media attention for once. Can’t remember the last article I read about them that didn’t mention sex abuse lawsuits.
Lack of sleep? Drugs? Pride? Or just plain stupidity.
Been hearing and saw video of this crossing...no gates not even flashing lights for a warning. The road just goes across the tracks.
You would think that would add to the truck driver being even more cautious when crossing unless he wasn’t familiar with it.
Sad though...to be sure.
I was a Cub and Boy Scout, and I can say it was a great introduction to becoming a man.
Glad to see that some scouts have held on to the old teachings.
“I was a Cub and Boy Scout, and I can say it was a great introduction to becoming a man.”
Same here. I had several great role models in my Troop.

Uncontrolled double track crossing at an angle to the line.
He may not have seen nor the heard the 80 mph train.
Good, positive article, for a change, about the BSA.

the two groups of Scouts broke windows and helped pull people out of train cars. They also used their advanced first-aid training to help injured passengers before first responders arrivedEmergency crews yes, but first responders? almost never the first to respond.
Another example of the left bastardizing the language
“...no gates not even flashing lights for a warning. The road just goes across the tracks.”
My son and I have a deer lease in rural OK where we have to cross the BNSF Transcon tracks with no marking beyond cross-bucks and a Stop sign. Since our lease is about a mile away from that crossing, we can hear the amount of rail traffic carried on that line so we’ve learned to carefully approach the crossing because the sight-lines are restricted by the angle of the crossing plus trees on both sides of the track. If we were crossing those rails on a daily basis, it might become easy to be complacent rather than careful.
I had three sons who were Boy Scouts, now in their 20s. My oldest (who stuck with BSA the longest) credits his BSA training for being a pro at camping at music festivals, lol.
He gets there early, sets up the site, and his non-BSA buddies show up way late, grateful someone knows what to do and how to camp.
My son also brings a shovel to the beaches that allow driving right on the sand and has dug out many people who didn’t deflate their tires enough.
He is an expert camper—his Troop didn’t even use tents—only tarps (he hates those now though).
I’m going to forward him this article; great yes to hear something about BSA other than sex offenses and wokeness.
Maybe the problem was noise cancelling ear buds.
“sight-lines are restricted by the angle of the crossing plus trees on both sides of the track”
Exactly what was being said about this crossing...almost word for word.
The sex offenses could be why they switched to tarps....
As I heard this on the news this morning, this old Eagle Scout thought, “Yeah, that sounds like some old school scouts.” Good for them.
I feel bad for the kid that was trying to help the guy who died. That’s gotta be rough on a kid.
Looks like they should mint some Medals of Merit really quick
